Know your NIN (National Identification Number) off-head.

1. It has 14 characters

2. The 14 characters are a mixture of letters and numbers

3. The NIN has no spaces or punctuations in it.

4. The first two characters are letters (CM or CF) representing C=Citizen and M/F=Male/Female

5. The next two characters are numbers representing the last two digits of your year of birth e.g., CM97 is a male citizen, born in 1997.

6. The next six characters are numbers representing a unique security permutation that is different for every ID Holder e.g., in CM97027102, the 027102 is the security permutation that must be different for each card holder. If you ever identify that you share these exact six numbers with another person, run to the next NIRA offices and lodge a complaint.

7. The last four characters are either a combination of letters and numbers (usually 3 letters and 1 number like X4CU) or only letters (like CJXE) with no significant representative meaning, but intended to increase the range of permutation.

This way, you can break your NIN down into 3 component parts and understand it off-head. The first four (CM97 or CF91) that is representative of gender and year of birth, the next 6 that are your unique combination (027102) and finally the last 4 mixture of letters and numbers or (X4CU).
