I’m technically a day off for this prompt, because Summer Solstice/First Day of Summer is the 21st this year and not the 20th, but it’s fine.
In NYC, there’s damn near an electric current in the air for the Summer, and I feel like it’s not just here. The past several years have been hard. The past two years have been some straight bullshit. I think there are finally enough cracks of joy breaking through for people to lean into them. This summer is bout to be different, no matter your age.
For Day 20 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that sounds like “we outside”!
More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.
I thought this was #loveislandusa not Zach Island. They can’t see Zach is always stirring the pot? Anyway, don’t they have a Love Island UK? Why is he here? Send his ass back across the pond.
Alright - Kendrick Lamar
The way this has gone diamond in my house since Nov 5, 2024.
🗣️Do you hear me? Do you feel me? We gonna be alright !!! @naima#musicsermon#BlackMusicMonthChallenge
Black music is powerful because it’s communal. It’s communication, it’s history, it’s our collective pain, our collective joy. It speaks to us in our own language. It’s liberation.
For Day 19 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, and in celebration of #Juneteenth, share your Black National Anthem. The song that makes you feel free, makes you feel like you can knock all this shit over, makes you feel ready for the fight. ✊🏾

Her velvety vocals and the heart-pounding drive of the band, along with the production makes her live concerts/albums a MUST HAVE.
