Thank you for sharing this. The book diagnoses a real anxiety: the feeling that AI is accelerating beyond our control and that we are not ready. That alarm is worth taking seriously.

But as a lens, the book is firmly rooted in what developmental psychologist Susanne Cook‑Greuter calls the Achiever stage (Stage 4). Here is what that means – and what it misses.

1. The Achiever sees a single, unstoppable force.
The Achiever mind frames AI as a monolithic, inevitable wave. It says: “AI will change everything, and you cannot stop it.” This is a zero‑sum, power‑centric view. It leaves no room for the fact that AI is already being fragmented – by geopolitics (US vs. China), by architecture (cloud vs. local), by governance (open vs. closed). The future is not one wave. It is a contested field.

2. The Achiever demands a “psychological seat belt” for the individual.
The book’s solution is individual adjustment: prepare yourself, manage your fear, brace for impact. This is not wrong, but it is radically incomplete. It ignores the collective response – the building of commons, the refusal of enclosure, the local, sovereign infrastructure that makes dependence on corporate AI optional. The Achiever cannot see the collective because it sees the world through the atomised self.

3. The Achiever mistakes its own frame for reality.
“Patterns never lie” – but patterns are always interpreted through a frame. The Achiever frame interprets AI as domination because it cannot imagine intelligence without hierarchy. It cannot see the unitive possibility: AI as accompaniment, as scaffolding, as a tool for mutual aid.

So the book is useful as a diagnosis of fear. But as a map of what to do, it is trapped in the very stage of consciousness that created the problem. The AI Commons offers a different lens: not “brace for impact” but “build the exits”. Not “AI will own you” but “you can own your AI”. Not panic, but practice.
