The fact that Croatia has become the most tourist-saturated country in the world makes me really sad.

When tourism becomes your entire economy:

- real estate prices shoot up until locals can't afford to live there
- seasonal jobs replace real careers
- the dream shrinks to owning one apartment and renting it out
- white collar jobs disappear because there's no one to hire for them
- you start importing cheap labor because locals won't do service jobs for what the market pays

And if you check any country where tourism is a major percentage of GDP, they're almost all poor countries. Croatia is at roughly 50%. Half of our economy is people showing up, drinking, and leaving.

Tragic.
