HR Manager: Hello, this is HR.

Employee: Hi, I’m calling because my salary just dropped from USD 7,000 to USD 4,000. There has to be some mistake.

HR Manager: It’s not a mistake. Your pay was geographically adjusted after your work-from-home relocation was processed.

Employee: Geographically adjusted? What do you mean?

HR Manager: When you requested to work remotely and moved from the city to a rural area, your compensation was changed under the company’s location-based pay policy.

Employee: Nobody told me my salary would be cut. How was I supposed to know that?

HR Manager: It is covered under Clause 12 of your employment contract, titled “Location-Based Pay.”

Employee: I remember signing my contract three years ago, but that clause was never there.

HR Manager: The contract was updated later, and you signed the revised version electronically.

Employee: I signed it, yes, but I honestly did not read the fine print. I had no idea this would affect my salary like this.

HR Manager: I understand, but your signature confirms acceptance of the updated terms.

Employee: This is a disaster. I have a car loan, a mortgage, and scholarship loans I’m still paying. I need to come back to the office immediately.

HR Manager: You can apply for an office-based reassignment, but policy requires you to remain in your current remote location for at least six months first.

Employee: Six months? I can’t survive six months on this pay.

HR Manager: After that, you may submit an application to return, but approval can take up to another six months.

Employee: So by the time this is fixed, I could be stuck for a full year?

HR Manager: Under the current policy, yes.

Employee: Amazing. One signature on a document I didn’t properly read just wiped out USD 3,000 of my monthly income.

HR Manager: I’m sorry, but the adjustment was made in line with the signed agreement.

The most expensive thing at work is not always the salary cut. Sometimes it is the fine print you didn’t read.
