It has focus groups for your anger. It has consultants who have modeled your anger and priced in your anger and designed messaging strategies calibrated to your anger that redirect it toward their preferred targets.

Left anger gets redirected at the right. Right anger gets redirected at the left.

The people funding both redirect flows meet for dinner and discuss the quarterly results.

What they have not fully modeled is contempt.

Contempt is different from anger. Anger wants to be heard, wants to win, wants to change something. Anger still believes in the arena.

Contempt has stopped believing in the arena.

Contempt looks at the Senate hearing and sees theater. Looks at the election and sees casting. Looks at the press conference and hears the specific cadence of people who know that nothing they say will have consequences and have long since stopped trying to make it true.

Contempt is not a political position that can be triangulated against.

It is a withdrawal of legitimacy.

And when enough people withdraw it simultaneously, not to a different party, not to a different candidate, but from the entire performance, the performance becomes very expensive to maintain.

They can manage your vote.

They cannot manufacture your belief.

And they are running, for the first time in a long time, genuinely low on it.

The textbook version of the American Revolution is a masterclass in selective principle.

It teaches that: taxation without representation is tyranny. That a people have the right to abolish a government that fails to serve them. That armed resistance to unjust authority is not only permissible but noble. That the spark of liberty, once lit, cannot be extinguished by any empire, however powerful.

These principles are taught as universal.

They are applied as particular.

When Haitians applied them in 1791, enslaved people reasoning that taxation without representation is tyranny, that a people have the right to abolish a government that fails to serve them, that armed resistance to unjust authority is noble, the American government refused to recognize their republic and maintained a trade embargo for sixty years.

When Vietnamese people applied them, a people have the right to determine their own government, foreign rule without consent is tyranny, resistance is legitimate, America sent 500,000 troops.

When Palestinians apply them. When Congolese apply them. When Bolivians apply them.

Instability. Terrorism. A threat to regional security.

The principle is yours when you use it.

It is a threat when someone else does.

That is not a principle.

That is a privilege dressed in the language of principle.

And the textbook teaches the language without ever mentioning the dress.

Where the country that sanctioned Iraq through the 1990s, killing an estimated 500,000 children through the denial of medicine and food, a number Madeleine Albright called "worth it" on national television, explained that it was doing so because it cared about the Iraqi people.

I am not asking you to hate America.

I am asking you to read the sentences above without looking away, and then tell me, with a straight face, that the question is whether to believe them.

And the governments of the world's self-described democracies continued to supply the weapons.

And the platforms continued to suppress the content.

And the people continued to scroll.

And the weapons continued to arrive.

We live in the first era of human history where it is possible to watch, in real time, the killing of a people, to see their faces, to hear their voices, to watch the moment the building falls, and for all that visibility to produce almost nothing.

Almost nothing.

No Nuremberg.

No intervention.

Hashtags. Protests that were permitted and then ignored. A ceasefire resolution vetoed. More weapons authorized.

If visibility alone could stop power, Gaza would have stopped it.

It didn't.

Which means we need to stop telling ourselves that awareness is the same as action.

That sharing is the same as solidarity.

That witnessing, even anguished witnessing, even enraged witnessing, is, by itself, a political act.

It is not.

The empire has made peace with being watched.

It has made peace with your outrage.

It factored your outrage into the plan.

And then it dropped the bomb anyway.
