When I was a child, my mum told me not to speak to strangers or go anywhere with them.
I asked what I should do if I got lost.
She said I should find an adult, explain that I'd been separated from my parents and ask for help.
Ideally, she said, find a woman.
Even better, a woman with a baby or small children, who could stay with me and ask another adult to help.
This was long before anyone talked about "safeguarding". But my mum instinctively understood that I was far less likely to come to harm from a woman than from a man.
I've since heard countless women say they were given the same advice and have passed it on to their own children.
Which is why I find some of the responses to the cancelled Camborne library drag story event so extraordinary.
Much of the discussion on the public posts about it focuses on the feelings of the performers, Ginger and Roxie: how hard they've worked, how well-intentioned they are and how upset they must feel.
In other words, putting the feelings of adult males first, without really engaging with why some parents are uncomfortable with men dressed as women reading stories to young children or performing at children's events.
Saying that drag performers are not appropriate for children's libraries or parties is not a judgement on any individual person or their intentions.
Even aside from concerns about adult entertainers performing for children, there are legitimate concerns around the messages we give children about sex, boundaries and risk.
Children trust adults.
They believe what adults tell them.
If children are told that Ginger and Roxie are a type of woman, or that men who wear women's clothes and make-up can literally become women, many children will simply accept that as true.
Especially if children find them entertaining and fun - as I'm sure they do.
That strikes me as a confusing message to give young children, particularly when, in other contexts, we teach them that sex matters when understanding the world and keeping themselves safe.
What I struggle to understand is why raising these concerns so often provokes outrage rather than reflection.
And why protecting the feelings of adult males is so often treated as more important than helping children develop the clear boundaries and understanding they need to keep themselves safe.

I wrote about the 13 men who have allegedly raped, drugged and encouraged another man's wife at his invitation in and around Stockport, Manchester.

I am absolutely disgusted by The Daily Mail’s headline.
They didn’t “romp”. He plied her with alcohol and raped her, and she took her own life.
The headline is as disgusting as the sentencing.
All these men chose to rape an unconscious woman because her husband invited them to do it.
They didn’t say no.
They didn’t get her help.
They violated her instead.
Name and shame every last one of them.
To the man who zoomed in on my body and pointed out my stretch marks ...this is how a real woman looks.
This is how a REAL WOMAN looks like - loose skin, saggy, stretch marks.
Ladies - we are PERFECT 👌
Great news. The Labour Party has finally found a woman they fancy as leader. It's a man who'll be 'a female PM in all but sex.'
A senior figure in the party actually thought that was a good thing to say out loud.

I'm sorry to say this latest craze is harmful.
Please DO provide clean water.
But please DON'T fill the dish with stones.
And certainly not marbles - glass will reach fatal temperatures within minutes of being in the sun, and will kill any insect landing on them.
Water needs to be fresh and clean *every day*.
If you put a lot of stones in it, they can harbour all sorts of dangerous water-borne pathogens and bacteria build up.
It will also make the water a mosquito breeding ground and the stones will harbour deadly parasites, like fluke.
Plus bees can get trapped and drown between the stones.
So please just provide a clean dish of tap water, with *one* easy to clean half submerged stone for the insects, or a few floating leaves, or a half submerged stick which can be replaced daily.🥰
14 men including her husband raped this poor woman after drugging her.
Men between the ages of 28 and 73!
The husband is in his 60s -
So this is probably not a young woman.
As we saw with Gisele Pelicot there is no age boundary or demographic excluded when men are invited to rape women by each other.
I’m glad one has pleaded guilty already to spare her at least one small ordeal of facing his defence team. The others should burn in hell. https://t.co/X3EMML0swx
ExposeTrophyHunters Mike Deasey hunted this elephant in Namibia. He exclaimed that, 'Hunting this magnificent creature was tremendous.' Yeah, he was magnificent, now he is just dead, Mike. #BanTrophyHunting
All these coverings are evil and all about control. Also fairly new in our world…and this burqa bullshit is the worst one of them all. Dehumanizing and that’s the least of it…
🚨The first openly transgender person elected to a US state legislature has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for child sexual exploitation.
Stacie Marie Laughton's defense had argued for a lower sentence on the basis of his possible "retardation."
