Becky has been doing these illustrations for my upcoming webinars. I absolutely love this one, showing how some children say ‘no’ because they don’t feel safe enough to say ‘yes’.
Article in the @nytimes about the spread of high control behaviour policies in schools in England. Quoting @MrsSDalton75 among others.
The journalist says that American schools have moved away from these policies after concerns were raised, but in England it has gone the other way.
When I post saying that more and more parents tell me about these highly controlling policies, I’m sometimes told that it’s not really on the increase, that I just have a biased sample. It seems that Tom Bennett disagrees with them.
‘Tom Bennett, a government adviser for school behavior, said that sympathetic education ministers had helped this “momentum.”
“There are lots of schools doing this now,” Mr. Bennett said. “And they achieve fantastic results.”’
Fantastic exam results, perhaps. But I’d argue that the other, unmeasured results are more children struggling to attend school and more parents unhappy with what they see. More children in isolation and more concluding that learning isn’t for them. We know that high control environments have psychological side effects.
What works to improve exam results can also hurt.

Here's one easy hack which could improve teenage mental health.
Stop telling teenagers that their GCSEs are the most important thing they'll ever do and that if they don't do well, their future life will be blighted.
People say this to motivate teenagers but for many it has the opposite effect. One third of teenagers are not going to do well in their GCSEs no matter how hard they work. This is how the system is designed. It's not one in which everyone can succeed.
Those teenagers believe you, but many of them also know that they are not going to do well. They think, not only is my life miserable now, it's going to be like this forever. They sink into despair. They lose motivation, they become stressed and anxious - because what is the point?
What can we tell them instead?
That there will be second chances. That not everyone passes exams. That we will help them find their way to a rewarding future, no matter what happens in their exams. That their worth as a person is not contained in their exam results.
Essentially, that there is hope for their future, no matter what.
Peaking the nation, one mum at a time. We need to peak the dads too. It’s funny how many men don’t want to know about this until they realise their precious daughter might be sharing a toilet with a pervy bloke who says he’s a woman. Then they really don’t like it.
@DrEricDing @farid__jalali Similar to PANS/PANDAS.
At what point will the medical community get educated regarding post infectious inflammation and autoimmune impacts?
Patients are suffering far longer than needed. Even current long covid research is not moving the system shifts needed
@DrNighatArif on @thismorning talking about #StrepA & the complications. Keep an eye out for the symptoms of this awful bacterial infection but also the horrendous complications that can occur #RheumaticFever & #PANDAS.

1500+ docs worldwide attended 2-day virtual medical conference last week sponsored by Foundation for Children with Neuroimmune Disorders. Did any anonymous authors of @BPNA_org consensus statement dismissing PANS/PANDAS bother to go? Stanford, Columbia and Yale were there.
Thank you to the person who has donated for research on #PANS. Many countries around the world will benefit from this research. @NHSEngland what research is the U.K. currently doing on this? @5_News
@A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org I would like to see the evidence the @BPNA used in creating the statement I would also like to know if they consulted with overseas experts or drs in other disciplines such as immunology when writing this ? @NHSEngland@MattHancock it’s risking a child’s health and life !
@A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org Are you going to pick up the pieces of all the broken families and children whose lives have been devastated by your 'consensus' statement @BPNA_org?
#FirstDoNoHarm
@A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org @NHSEngland @NHSEnglandNMD @NICEComms@MattHancock “Talk with the leading experts & review the research” Please follow this advice @BPNA_org 4 sake of UK children suffering now & those who will suffer if you uphold your damaging statement. 3.8K families in support group some with multiple children suffering. We won’t be silent
@A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org I would like to know the specialities and experience of the dr's who wrote this statement. They are denying treatments which work, treatments which are in the guidelines in USA and Norway.
#DoNoHarm
@npayne9000 @A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org I would like to know the evidence behind this consensus statement too. Looking at the references used by the @BPNA_org they seem to have taken bits from medical papers and ignored the rest. The result is children left untreated. @BorisJohnson what are you doing about this?
@soniaserrano0@A_Mueller_12 @BPNA_org @MattHancock & just refusing to even see children. Both my twins referred to neurology and both rejected. Waited 4 years to see CAMHS psychiatrist for 1 of them. Fluoxetine made him worse so stopped it & now discharged again. Still suffering. Antibiotics for his acne have saved him @BPNA_org
