@Dr_Perreault I would maybe start a discussion with the institutions that see volunteerism as a bonus, such as the professional schools, to change their entrance criteria. Getting good grades to get into these programs is also a priviledge.

I understand your point, but I think it is more nuanced. I have paid positions, but there is no way that I could accommodate all the requests and pay everyone. And to be clear, most are looking into veterinary school and that is why they want to volunteer.
