π΄πβ»οΈπ Wild Asian elephants in India forage at landfill sites. In doing so, they consume large amounts of plastic trash and then inadvertently pollute their forest homes with their plastic-filled dung:

We've done it!! STAE's @UKChange#petition urging a UK ban on advertising of unethical and brutal Asian elephant tourism has surpassed 1 MILLION signatures, each one a voice for the elephants! Now help us get to 1.5 MILLION! https://t.co/kGispjt6TG
πWill your grandchildren get to see Asian elephants in the wild? The species is *Threatened with Global Extinction* (@IUCNRedList) with only c. 50,000 left, scattered across 13 countries. Many populations are too small to successfully reproduce long-term. π«ππ« #Asianelephants
@lydia_tiller@okitaben I'm surprised to hear that people are using the underpasses to set up dwellings, but I suppose, it makes sense. For people of limited means, they no doubt offer good shelter!
@lydia_tiller@lydia_tiller I've heard about apps like these for tracking or even spotting wild game. Do you think it increases poaching risk at all? How secure is the data?
@kt_yee Wow, that's fascinating! Thank you so much - I'm excited to be able to follow yours, too! I am working with supporters from Sabah so we should definitely keep in touch πππ
1/6 πHi, Iβm Kate and Iβm studying human and Asian elephant interactions (HEI), exploring links between human behaviour and elephant responses. As human populations increase, HEI is becoming more & more prevalent: #DICECON21#HumWild https://t.co/menZJXPSt8
5/6 Despite respondents at the majority of sites saying local people βmostly fearβ π¨ elephants, a majority are understood to be βmoderately-β to βhighly-tolerantβ of them, with spiritual beliefs/customs π positively impacting tolerance. #DICECON21#HUMWILD#Asianelephants
@Glyn_nature I know @nanimontreuil for example, is working hard to promote tolerance towards ellies on social media. And perhaps digitisation is helping during emergency scenarios? It would be fascinating to explore further!
6/6 Finally, huge thanks to @tanyahumle for her tireless supervision, Hannah and Samantha in our #HWC team, and to all who supported this project. Thank you so much to @UniKent & @DICE_Kent for this life-changing Master's, I'm so chuffed I did it. βΊοΈπππ #DICECON21#HUMWILD
@Mic_Lo1 I was primarily thinking that the Hindu God, Ganesha, would impact tolerance levels, but that whole range encompasses Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity and possibly lots more!
@Mic_Lo1 You're so right! I forgot to include that β fairly crucial β bit! π¬ I aimed to cover the whole Asian Elephant range, and got responses from Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. ππΏπ
