Making my first tweet (ever) for #PhageWeek2021 and the #scicomm challenge! Hello other #phage lovers. I'm Kath, I am based in Sydney and for my PhD project I am characterising phages of Rhodococcus equi that I have isolated from horse farms.

@stephh_lynch @phagedirectory It's a soil saprophyte that gets inhaled but also ingested, and then replicates drastically in the GI tract of the foal and in faeces in the environment - loves those fatty acids! So I collected/extracted phages from soil and foal faecal samples :)

@stephh_lynch @phagedirectory However it can cause a whole bunch of other disorders and in other species too, including pneumonia in immunocompromised humans! It is often mixed up with TB infections

@stephh_lynch @phagedirectory Thankyou! Haha I'm still working out how to use Twitter, such a novice 🤣 R. equi mainly causes pneumonia in foals up to 6 months old - colloquially we call the disease 'Rattles' due to the laboured/rattling breathing of the foal with pussy abscesses in it's lungs.
