I write poetry and reflections on healing, self awareness, and self expression. I write what aches, what mends and turn it into words you can carry with you.

The biggest lie in African literature is that we must write "authentically" for Western audiences. Your grandmother's proverbs don't validate your art. Stop performing Africa. Write the messy, contradictory, globalized reality you actually live in.
We want your story! The 2026 Commonwealth Short Story Prize has begun 📚
Citizens of Commonwealth countries aged over 18 can enter. Stories should be between 2,000–5,000 words and must be unpublished fiction. Entry is free, and you can write on any theme.
Five regional winners will be announced next May. One of these five will be named the overall winner and receive £5,000. The regional winners will receive £2,500. All five regional winning stories will be published on Granta.

When I sew bags, I get to choose the fabric, the design, and the mood I want to set. Writing poetry lets me express how I feel and explore the themes that resonate with me.Both activities invite people to connect with who I am and how I view the world.
Poetry and bag-making are two different things, yet they both provide something we seek in different places: "self-expression". They fulfill the need to show something of our authentic selves.
