There is much of interest in Richard's analysis. But I do not think it invalidates Rupert's report. These crimes are clearly ethnoreligious in nature. Rupert has focused mostly on the religion motivations from Islamic theology. Richard is focusing on the clan nature of the criminal network of gangs and how they operate (which is obviously important).

However, I think you and he are missing the point of Rupert's report, which is not as an academic paper or as a policy document on how to deal with the criminal network, but as a blunt instrument to raise public awareness and pressure (nationally and internationally); and to break down what Richard describes as the "toxic political and social environments that paralyse objective thinking and prevent the formulation of an effective policy response".

Frankly, I think that one of the reasons that Rupert has not gone into detail about the nature of the criminal network is not to overload the public with more terrifying information than they can take in or believe at one time. Remember that we have been on X for years. Many members of the public are only just learning about this now. (And I suspect that X has provided a good sample of the public to see how fast the public can process this information and to study the public reaction - and this information is now starting to be rolled out across the country via the media.) We will have to be somewhat patient while the public outside of X catches up.

Rupert's report is part of a process to build the public and political will to do what is necessary to deal with the network of gangs. It looks likely to me that this will amount to a military-style operation and he needs the entire British people behind him.

Rupert focuses attention in his report on the dangers of the spread of Islam across Britain. This is very important. I am not saying that there do not exist cultural Muslims who do not believe in aspects of Islamic theology (or have a different interpretation). Of course there are, but this is beside the point. This danger needs to be discussed openly without people shying away from the term "Islamophobia". Then, once this is understood, we can have a more nuanced discussion of the ethnic clan nature of the criminal network and how it operates, and learn the scale of what we face.
