As we celebrate the resilience, stories and mana of the Banabans, let us not forget the human and trauma borne by their communities and the generations to come.
We must keep their stories alive and ensure that history does not repeat itself.
The relocation of the people of Banaba to a new land against their will was a direct result of an extractive industry and global trade.

What an honour to celebrate our Banabans through an art exhibition telling the story of their forced displacement & ongoing human rights struggles. Britain, Aust & NZ prospered through phosphate mining to create agricultural industries at the expense of generations of Banabans.

We cannot simply force the next generation to pick up the pieces—young voices must take centre stage in our conversations around the climate crisis.
It was inspiring to spend time with the C40 youth delegation. I fully support their urgent call for green jobs.
We were hosted by some amazing students focused on climate issues from Auckland - a city now directly connected to #Chicago via @fly2ohare and @FlyAirNZ (which has started using sustainable biofuel)
Here at the #C40Summit I featured #Chicago’s work to support green jobs via developments like Garfield Green - a $40M project on city-owned land that will create affordable housing & homeownership, 2/3 coverage w/ green space, capture 100% water, & be largest passive bldg in city
5 days to go until our Launch night! Please join us at the Onehunga Community Recycling Centre this Friday- the first Pacific and Māori led and owned recycling center - as part of @aklclimatefest and supported by @AklCouncil and UNESCO NZ
