Wahome Mutahi — fondly known to the nation as Whispers — was the rare genius who could turn a Sunday morning into a theatre of laughter. As a columnist for the Sunday Nation, he crafted stories so witty, so sharply observant, and so richly political that you could feel your ribs loosen with every paragraph. His humour was not just comedy; it was social commentary wrapped in mischief, satire, and a deep understanding of the Kenyan soul.

Through unforgettable characters like Apep, Thatcher, Whispers Junior, and the ever-chaotic Whispers family, he built a world where everyday Kenyan struggles became hilariously familiar. And of course, readers still chuckle at the mention of his beloved watering hole — the legendary City Mortuary Bar, the place where he “irrigated his throat” as he brewed his next riotous tale.

His life, as brilliant as his pen, was cut tragically short when he died following complications from a brain tumour. Yet his legacy lives on in the echoes of laughter he left behind — a reminder of a man who used humour to hold a mirror to our politics, our absurdities, and our humanity.

At the IGAD Youth for Peace Conference in Nairobi, @Midrifthurinet’s representation through Catherine Wanderi reaffirmed that youth are central actors in peace and security, not peripheral voices.

Her contributions echoed the lived realities from grassroots dialogues in Nakuru, demonstrating how community-led initiatives can inspire regional solutions.

The conference underscored the urgency of repositioning youth as active decision-makers, leveraging digital platforms for peace, and institutionalizing inclusive policies that embrace young men and women as equal stakeholders in conflict prevention.

The forum illuminated the transformative potential of cross-cultural exchange and youth-driven innovation by learning from Uganda’s youth councils and Djibouti’s peace education models.

The way forward calls for embedding youth in peace and security structures across the IGAD states, humanizing women’s roles in these processes, and cultivating cross-border collaborations that tackle shared challenges.

Kenya 🇰🇪 was loud and proud at the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Youth Peace and Security Conference in Nairobi, where youth leaders across the Horn of Africa came together to share experiences and shape solutions for peace by enhancing youth participation in peace and security.

Our Catherine Wanderi, Youth Engagement Officer, represented @Midrifthurinet , bringing grassroots voices and insights from our youth engagement programs to the regional stage.

From Uganda’s progressive youth councils to Djibouti’s peace education in schools, young leaders from across the Horn of Africa boldly sent a clear message: Youth are not bystanders; they are peacebuilders, decision-makers, and leaders of today!

As @IGADsecretariat Executive Secretary H.E. Workneh Gebeyehu reminded us: “There is no peace without youth," This was the spirit that guided the conference conversations.

Day 1 of the conference highlighted powerful ideas on the need for inclusive policies that bring youth to decision-making tables, the importance of turning digital platforms into spaces for peace, leveraging elections for unity rather than division, and sharing local solutions.
