A sad day in the airline industry: Spirit Airlines shut down after 34 years.
My heart goes out to all the staff going through this. Just terrible.
Some thoughts: https://t.co/sM5WFXLCEa
And I leave you with this little ditty from former Spirit CEO Ted Christie in 2019.
The weekend has turned into a white-knuckle affair for travelers with Spirit Airlines tickets as they wait to see how the airline’s financial troubles will play out. https://t.co/BpH8cK0MFZ
Because every other analyst, expert, enthusiast, etc., etc., out there is commenting on #Spirit — I’m joining the party.
Just for scope: Spirit was scheduled to operate 609 flights Sat-Sun. That’s 120,000+ seats, which we know aren’t all sold, but still that means a percentage of ppl impacted with the only option of *buying* a new flight.
There are two sides to the Spirit coin, but travelers are going to pay either way.
Liquidation: higher fares / less options
Bailout: taxes funneled / delaying the dismal outcome we face now🙂↕️
SCOOP: The Trump administration is in talks with other budget airlines about a combined $2.5 BILLION lifeline. Frontier and Avelo are among the airlines who recently made this pitch to Trump admin officials.
That detailed proposal has been brought to the White House and comes as the admin is nearing an up to $500 million lifeline with Spirit Airlines

@AP I wouldn’t wait to see what your options are once your flight is canceled - I always tell people to have a “fall back flight” in mind already. Remember it’s a race to rebooking between you and everyone else disrupted, so you need an edge with equipping yourself with info
Delta raising bag fees is as surprising as losing a scratch off lottery ticket for travelers
Your odds are higher to lose then to win, and unfortunately right now in this market, travelers are in for more losing.
Where this is really going to hurt is the already too packed overhead bin space!
@AlexInAir Data source re: the figures on NY to London fares? We aren’t seeing such a rise (rise for sure, but not +100% ) I think there is some nuance missing here re: fares. When consumers search they are likely seeing/focusing on the 10th percentile - insightful ep regardless!
#JFK Terminal 8 at 9:45 AM… vibes were good, lines were short, an breezed through in 8 minutes with Touchless ID. However 2 weeks from now this could be a very different story.
As well as, some officers I spoke to said their deposits weren’t the full amount…
Travelers still need to listen to Mom and Dad — get to the airport early. Waiting at the gate > waiting in a potential line

It’s not a good sign to see airlines already using this tool in their arsenal of how to recoup rev with higher oil prices.
The one who pays the ultimate price = the traveler 🫠
United is pulling ~5 percentage points in planned 2026 capacity due to high fuel prices.
Cuts include:
• 3pts of off-peak flying (redeyes, Tues/Wed/Sats) in Q2/3;
• 1pt in ORD when the FAA process concludes;
• 1pt from cancelling TLV and DXB service

@krisvancleave Definitely can be a game changer! However, sometimes the tech isn’t “cooperating” and can be out of commission, had this happen in a few instances in the last two months
@Crypto_LedgerX@DeItaone Could it be more expensive, sure, however summer is an already expensive time to travel. How much more expensive is the question, and will depend on the airline. Biggest tip is you should be buying airfare for summer now anyways!
@william_R2Rclub@YahooFinance Slight pull back is what we are seeing travelers forecasting, but take that with a grain of salt! No one for sure knows how 2026 will play out. But from an affordability standpoint, we don’t expect major swings
