🚨NEW: Manchester United would have to make Lewis Hall the most expensive left-back in history if they are to convince Newcastle United to sell him this month.

That record currently stands at £68million, the fee Bayern Munich paid Real Madrid for Lucas Hernandez in July 2019.

However, new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle does not want to lose Hall, and the club have made it clear they are not looking to sell.

United are prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve with just over a week of the window remaining, but we understand a bid in the region of £70million is unlikely from the Old Trafford club.

🚨 JUST IN: United contacted Balde’s agent Jorge Mendes this week to enquire about the conditions of a potential transfer and whether an exit is feasible. Balde himself is not pushing for a move and remains happy at Barcelona as a club-trained player with a strong relationship there; any departure would only happen if Barcelona decide to sell him (for instance, following a top-club offer), making the situation roughly 50/50 depending on whether a sufficiently attractive proposal arrives in the final days of the window.

🚨NEW: The last time I spoke to a club source about United potentially signing a striker this summer, they suggested it was down the priority list.

United have considered striker options during the window, whilst knowing that other areas were the priority, and whether a move is made or not will depend on Joshua Zirkzee's position.

Michael Carrick claimed at his press conference on Thursday that no player has expressed a desire to leave and that he expects no outgoings, but Zirkzee has attracted interest from Italy, so it's one to keep an eye on.

🔴 On Bruno Fernandes: Carrick says the captain remains a “big player” for United and will continue to have a major impact, but says there will be times when they need to look after him during the season.

🔴 On the Champions League: “We want to be finishing in the Champions League again without doubt. It’s a challenge, it’s a big challenge.”

🔴 “We managed to do that last season and we’ve got to aim to do the same and then keep pushing on through the season to see how it develops.”

🔴 On the midfield: Carrick says United have a “really good balance” after signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos and is delighted with the value the club have got from the pair.

🔴 On Tielemans and Santos: “They’re two fantastic players, who give us really good balance, give us a lot within the team and offer us different things.”

On Sesko: “Ben is back training, so that is another positive, and looking forward to having him back around the group and getting him some minutes.”

On De Ligt: “Mattha has been out for a long period of time, but he is training. (It’s) great to have him back,” said Carrick. “He won’t be involved, but he is in good shape, moving in a good direction, so that is a bonus for us.”

On Mount: “I think first of all Mason is a top player; we have seen that in pre-season he was one of our best players in the early stages, the first games, I thought he was fantastic. Not surprising, it’s what I’ve seen before, what I expect of him.

And he’s picked up a bit of a knock; there are no dramas, it’s been ten days. It is nothing major. He has missed some football over recent years, and he wants to be fit and be in that full rhythm and stay fit. And we are doing our best to help him do that.

But he is a top player, Mason. We have to manage the squad. There are going to be injuries though the season, we’ve got to have a squad that is strong enough to have a really top starting team with the depth to carry us through the season. "I thought LB was going to be the next area that they address to be honest. And so, you know, this is a slight deviation from that, although as you say, you know, maybe it's cover for Luke Shaw. I think it suggests that if they do make a signing in that LB role, which I still would anticipate to be honest, it would probably be at the lower end cost scale. So I mean for example I think it's Jorge Salinas has been looked at by United, Racing Santander, he's got a release clause in his contract about 16 million euro so he's only 19 but you could see him perhaps then being of greater appeal because United have got money to spend obviously that they're spending, you know, sort of 65M here but I don't think it's a limitless pot where you're going to go and then see them go and sign Lewis Hall for example.

I think that one is looking less likely and then I suppose if you do sign a player that's a developing player for lower cost now, then you could perhaps revisit the Lewis Hall one next summer because he's certainly a player that United admire."

"United watched him there [AFCON], like what they saw, like the underlying data, which brought me to a report that I did in April to say that they were looking at signing him this summer again. Highly plausible at that moment and it would have been a lot lower transfer fee than they were talking last summer. Now it's taken a little bit of time for them to get to this point and I think at certain moments in the summer it might have been the case that they wouldn't have necessarily gone for him because they'd signed Santos and Tielemans in that midfield.

But certain circumstances have arisen to make them go for him now, and I think they've got a good deal what it looks like sort of 60M/65M it's probably going to be, you know, a guarantee then add-ons to get to that total but that's obviously a lot lower fee than what Brighton were wanting last summer and so I think for the combined cost of sort of, you know, maybe £105M they've got two players in Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba that, you know, when you look at what Tottenham have spent on Tonali or what Anderson went for to Man City, United will be satisfied at getting that kind of deal across the line."

“This is a long-term target for Manchester United. They tried to sign him last summer. Brighton made it pretty clear he wasn’t for sale at that point.

I think they did make an inquiry in January that was rebuffed as well, but clearly Brighton’s stance has softened. I’ve got to say, sources down on the Sussex coast were remaining pretty tight-lipped this lunchtime, but Manchester United seem confident this deal will GET DONE.

And not only will it get done, but for less than the £75 million that Brighton were perhaps looking for previously. Baleba, much like Cunha, has already agreed personal terms. So I think this is a deal that could develop pretty quickly.

Manchester United fans have been a bit impatient in this window. They signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans relatively early, but business has been quiet at Old Trafford since then. I think the United hierarchy have been determined to bide their time and not pay over the odds for players.

Again, it worked last season, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in particular — proven, tried and tested in the Premier League, much like Baleba. I think he’ll bring that energy to midfield that Manchester United have perhaps been lacking.”
