Standing up for members, supporting careers, and delivering real outcomes. That’s what makes us different, that’s what makes us strong, and that’s why we’re the fastest growing union in the country.
A pleasure to deliver my speech to the Annual Delegate Conference, celebrating the strength of our union.
The chill this has sent through the civil service is no surprise. Sir Olly's dismissal comes just two months after the PM sacked the Cabinet Secretary after extensive anonymous briefing.
Government only works when there is trust between ministers and civil servants.
It is truly a privilege to serve as General Secretary of the FDA and I could not be prouder to be re-elected for another 5 year term. The challenges never cease but neither does the inspiration in representing the dedicated public servants who make up our growing membership.
In case being fitted for your first pair of varifocals didn’t make you feel old enough, the opticians playing ‘The Music Sounds Better With You’ as it happens ought to do it.
.@jessphillips is pulling such a great face in this picture. To me it says ‘I know this whole posing thing is a bit ridiculous, but I am massively proud so I don’t give a shit’
The sooner the new govt can raise morale, reward work, attract talent and expertise, and signal to civil servants that they are valued, the more effective the CS will be at delivering across every single governmental priority.
Why the new govt should not deprioritise CS pay 👇
Some odd election stats. Gus O’Donnell only saw 2 changes of govt in his whole civil service career, yet this is my 7 yr old’s 3rd general election & if polls are right, tomorrow will bring her 5th Prime Minister. Also would be her 7th SoS for Education since she started school.
Civil servants know the challenges the public sector faces because they live with them every day. Whoever wins the election needs a civil service with the right resources, skills & motivation to help transform those services.

@caitlinmoran Me too, I love taking my seven-year-old daughter so she can see how it works and why it matters, and how it can only happen because people freely give their time.
Ministers can prioritise currying favour with whatever wing of the party they feel they need to ingratiate themselves with, or they can lead the civil service, they can’t do both.
It appears John Glen has chosen the former.

It’s extraordinary, in a city where hybrid working’s evident across the private sector, we still get the accusation that this is a public sector phenomenon. Trashing the brand for cheap headlines & limiting flexible working isn’t going to attract the talent they say they want to.
The brass neck of Truss, blaming everyone for her own failings. Career civil servants will spend most of their working lives serving Conservative govts. When exactly were they captured by “left wing ideology”? What exactly did they stop you from doing? Trashing the economy?
@richardosman It’s like a 14 year old boy created it - “let’s have planes and a fast car and the men’s football team and the king and the bit about being second best in the world really massive!”
Today, I have spoken with members about local issues, celebrated @FDA_union successes, and agreed areas for focus in the year ahead with our branch committee. 💪 #HeartUnionsWeek#JoinAUnion
