Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel prize winner and one of the most important Jewish intellectuals in the world, adds his voice to debunk the narrative that pro-Palestinian protests on campuses is antisemitic. He calls it "normal human empathy":

"What a large number of young people are expressing is normal human empathy. They don't want to see people die unnecessarily. And I think the pictures, the fact that tens of thousands of people have died, including lots of children and women, innocent bystanders, in the attack on Gaza, in a very short span of time, has had a horrific impact. And they're saying this is unjust. And it has brought back to the fore that much of the architecture of the world was shaped in a colonial era. And many of these people are from countries that themselves were shaped in a colonial era.

So what I hear, and what's going on, is a real sense of empathy for so many people dying unnecessarily, and outrage at collective punishment, which is unacceptable. And it brings back to the fore reflections on colonialism and its consequences, that remind us that history doesn't just disappear, even if one would like it to."

The police are summoned to threaten, to repress, to create fear. This is the core of their role.

I visited the Gaza solidarity camp at Columbia yesterday and wanted to share a few
very brief observations.

First, it's one of the most highly organised student protests I've ever seen. They have media and de-escalation training, a nutzone to protest students with allergies.

Hard to explain the reality of pre-ACA unless you lived through it, but:

Before the ACA, if you got sick, health insurers could decide to just not cover you. Many people could not get health instance. An estimated 25-50% of America had pre-existing conditions. Obama fixed that.

Mexico abolished slavery in 1829. Enslaved people were escaping to Mexico. The U.S. tried to get Mexico to sign a fugitive slave treaty to return escapees but Mexico refused to sign such a treaty, insisting that enslaved people were free once they set foot on Mexican soil.

—Did you know that Juneteenth is also celebrated in a part of Mexico?
Nacimiento Mexico was once home to thousands who escaped slavery in the US. As many as 10,000 slaves followed a clandestine Southern Underground Railroad to Mexico.

—To date, many Black Mexicans from the Texas area retrace a portion of the same route their African American ancestors followed in 1850 when they escaped slavery.

—Descendants of slaves who escaped across the southern border observe Texas’s emancipation holiday with their own unique traditions in the village of Nacimiento.

—Slave hunters would patrol the southern border for escapees, led by the Texas Rangers but the Mexican army would be there waiting for them (the slave hunters) to turn them away.
