When I started angel investing in 2021, one of my biggest mistakes I made was applying traditional fundamental analysis to early-stage investing. Seemed smart at the time but most of those checks I wrote went to zero.
Wrote five small $5k checks then, nothing serious. Three of them went to zero. One returned my money while the last one appreciated a bit, but still has no clear path to any liquidity event.
At the time, I worked in a private investment firm with an investment process closer to PE, so naturally, that shaped how I approached investing. I was trying to analyze startups like mature businesses. Crunching numbers that, frankly, had very little bearing on the true fundamentals of the opportunity. Not saying crunching numbers aren’t great but heavy reliance shouldn’t be placed on them esp at the early stage where a company is still trying to find its bearing.
2024 I came back for round 2 and went down the rabbit hole to gather insights from the OGs. Watched almost every Olumide Soyombo, Kola Aina, and Iyin Aboyeji video I could find on the internet, studying how they approached startup investing and a recurring theme I noticed was that their early-stage investments thesis were mostly driven by qualitative judgment. Things like Founder quality, market insight, distribution, Industry direction etc and the potential for that industry to attract capital for future liquidity were the recurring theme I noticed.
While I was busy building spreadsheets for businesses too early to be properly gauged that way, the prolific guys already knew the right questions to ask. Sometimes, they had already decided they wanted exposure to a specific sector and were simply looking for the right operator to back.
In 2024, I refined my philosophy and came back for round two.
Still nowhere near as prolific as the OGs, but the ROIC on my portfolio so far tells me one thing clearly that I’ve definitely gotten better at this 😃

URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP.
DEAR EVERYONE,
We humbly appeal to kind-hearted individuals, organizations, and members of the public to come to the aid of this young widow and her three children.
During the holy month of Ramadan, while preparing Sahoor for her family, a pot of hot water accidentally poured on her arm, causing a severe burn injury. What started as a painful accident has become a prolonged struggle because she could not afford proper medical treatment and wound care. As a result, the wound has worsened, leaving her in constant pain and making it difficult for her to work and provide for her children.
This mother is raising three children alone after the loss of her husband. Sadly, despite the existence of family farmland and other shared properties that her late husband had with his siblings that could have helped support her and her children, she has been denied access to these resources, this happened because she refused pressure from the family of her late husband to remarry her late husband’s stepbrother.
This situation is even more sad and heartbreaking because her husband also died from fire accident complications.
Today, she faces two urgent challenges:
Medical treatment and wound care to help her recover and heal properly.
Financial support to start a small business or employment so she can provide food, education, and basic necessities for her three children and regain her independence.
I have been the only one taking care of her since her husband demise last year, it became more intense and too much on me when the fire accident happened and I cannot continue doing this alone.
Her hand is getting so bad, the smell is so bad too that I had to hold my breath to take these pictures with her. And I want to do everything possible I can do for her before I leave Nigeria back to the UK.
No amount is too small. Every contribution will make a meaningful difference in helping this widow rebuild her life and secure a better future for her children.
We sincerely appeal to everyone to show compassion and extend a helping hand during this difficult time.

WALKING THE TALK!!!
Beyond tweeting & ranting from the comfort of my room in Europe, I joined other comrades in Ibadan today on a peaceful protest to demand for the immediate release of our kids, wives, fathers & mothers abducted in Oriire.
The remaining #45 must be rescued with the speed it deserves.
@officialABAT & @seyimakinde must leave no stone unturned in getting them out of the dungeon.

For the first 7 years of my career, while building my career as a young 9-5'er, many people within my family and friends saw me as "stingy".
But deep down me, I was sure I was not. They were only overrating my financial capability.
Today is children’s day, but 46 innocent children learning in their classrooms in Ogbomosho, Oyo state were kidnapped by gunmen.
It’s been two painful weeks already and these children are still not home with their families, suffering out there in the cold and enduring fear and uncertainty that no child should ever know.
This is a National crisis and the government must use every resource necessary to bring these children home. Nothing else matters in this moment.
We owe our children a safer country.
Alhamdulillah Robbil ‘Alameen!!!

Who’s the Oyo state House of Aseembly member representing the good people of Oriire, his voice should be the loudest as we speak- is he here on X? I want to have a cursory look at how he’s handling the situation? Everyone must be held accountable.

1. Be someone they can trust. If you say you’ll deliver something by a certain time, do it. And if something comes up, communicate early enough, not after the deadline has passed. Of course, things happen sometimes, but it shouldn’t become a regular thing. My managers know that once I say I’ll handle something, it’ll get done.
2. Don’t overpromise. If you realistically can’t do something, say it clearly and explain why. It’s better to manage expectations properly than to disappoint people later.
3. Learn how to navigate office politics while still doing your job well. Relationships matter more than people like to admit.
4. Be visible. Good work is important, but people also need to know you’re doing good work.
5. Ask questions when you’re unclear instead of struggling in silence for hours.
6. Make your manager’s life easier. People remember team members who reduce stress, not add to it.
7. Your technical skills can get you in the room, but communication skills will keep you there.
8. Be solution-oriented. Anybody can point out problems; people value those who come with possible solutions too.
9. Build relationships across teams. Sometimes opportunities come from people you’ve never directly worked with.
10. Protect your reputation early. In most workplaces, people talk, and impressions spread fast.

Day 8 😭😢🤦♀️
It’s unbelievable, a whole one week in the forest, something tells me the government of the day believes some lives are more important than the other. I know when a friend of a popular Nigerian celebrity died few months ago, he’s not only called by the Presidency, but the Governor of Ogun state was at his bedside too.
Two teachers have been confirmed dead, one on the spot, another in the bush, no government personnel have visited nor called their families, there’ve been no such call to family of the victims in the bush either.
They’ve now slept in that forest for 7 days & it’s already a week to the disturbing incidence.

Teejay is my Childhood friend of over 30 years, his wife is amongst the teachers abducted in Oriire on Friday by the terrorists.
This is beyond an advocacy for us as a family, this hit our home more than anyone can imagine.
Tonight will be the 5th day in that jungle, President @officialABAT & Gov @seyimakinde please do everything within your combined capacity to free our wives, mothers, fathers, children, brother, sisters abducted by the terrorists.
Sleep has evaded us, our hearts has been in our mouths and our lives has never remained same.

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me
