Beyond time to address this issue. ED overcrowding can lead to long wait times, and are certainly inconvenient for anyone, but what concerns healthcare providers is the safety risk and adverse events that older adults experience because of that overcrowding.

Older adults, the ‘social admission,’ and non-specific complaints in the ED;

Bottom line is that we shouldn’t use these labels and instead find the acute problem that we’re likely missing, and recognize that this population is high-risk for decline and death.

Acute Coronary Syndrome in Older Adults. Bottom line, it’s not going to present as chest pain, EKG interpretation is more difficult, and geriatric syndromes impact management and outcomes 🩺🚑❤️
