UPDATE: Prince Patrick Mpuuga and Prince Solomon Nyaika, sons of Omusuuga Charles Karumasi, have accused self-interested individuals of hijacking their father and using him to advance their own agenda. They say their father retired during last year’s coronation anniversary, after which the process of identifying and installing a new Musuuga was expected to begin. The princes further argue that the will left by the late King Oyo is binding on all parties involved in the succession dispute. They also challenge the suggestion that a king can be elected, arguing that monarchs are not chosen through voting. Their comments come amid a succession row following the appointment of Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi as the new King of Tooro.

Bunyoro-Kitara’s history reminds us that royal succession has not always been a simple or uninterrupted process.

The Babiito dynasty traces its beginnings to Isingoma Mpuga Rukidi I, traditionally placed around the 14th century. Centuries later, Omukama Kyebambe IV Kamurasi reigned from 1852 to 1869, followed by other members of the royal lineage.

Tooro is different: it had George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, who reigned 1928–1965.

I therefore wish that, in our sister kingdom of Tooro, the current succession process will be handled peacefully, wisely and in accordance with the traditions, customs and legitimate institutions of the Babiito royal family.

May God guide the elders, princes, royal family and all the people of Tooro to reach a decision that preserves the unity, dignity and continuity of our beloved kingdom.

Long live Tooro. Long live the Babiito.

It was with a lot of sadness, that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan.

I extend the most heart-felt condolences from the brother People of Uganda and from my family and myself, to your Excellency, your family and the People of Tanzania.

Eversince I started knowing you as Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania and now as President, I have witnessed your love for your country and Africa and your dedication.

We have done a lot together in the areas of trade, the East African Oil Pipeline, the Murongo-Kyikagate mini-hydro station, the tarmac roads on the side of Tanzania, the transmission-line from Masaka-Bukoba, the SGR to Isaka and, eventually, to Uganda and beyond, to mention just some.

The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family. I have met your son, Mr. Abdul, a few times.

It must, therefore, be a great loss to you. I pray that the Almighty God sees you through these dark days. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
