Political parties are not law-enforcement agencies. They are not authorities empowered to dispense justice.

They cannot effect arrests, demand documents, inspect compliance, or instruct anyone to shut down a business or place of https://t.co/fnOnS2x7Z4 bearers of political parties in councils, legislatures and Parliament have oversightpowers only, conferred strictly by the rules of those institutions.

Even then, they are not, in any way, shape or form, peace officers.

So, when a political party barges into your shop, your clinic or your workplace and arrogates to itself the role of law enforcement or a government compliance unit, understand this clearly: they are trespassing and they are harassing you. Kick them out.

If they refuse to leave, call law enforcement, have them removed, and lay charges for trespassing and harassment.

The MK Party has recently been seen storming healthcare facilities, supermarkets and other businesses under the delusion that it has legal authority to “inspect” and enforce what it claims are labour law violations and/ or immigration laws. It has none.

The MKP has no jurisdiction, no locus standi in law, and no mandate whatsoever. Its actions are ultra vires, unlawful and nothing more than political thuggery masquerading as activism. KZN cannot be overrun by people dressed in military fatigues – desperately impersonating lawful authorities and threatening the public.This behaviour must not be celebrated. It must be confronted.

These individuals should be charged, not cheered; called out, not carried on people’s shoulders.

When complaints are received from healthcare facilities or businesses, SAPS, metro police or the relevant local law-enforcement agencies must act swiftly and decisively to protect lawfully operating businesses from the MKP’s intimidation and illegal attempts to do the work of the state.

Citizens must know their rights and the limits of the law. If they do not, the MK Party’s lawlessness will continue unchecked.

There must be a firm stand against what is tantamount to criminality, and SAPS must lead when called upon.The Department of Employment and Labour has an enforcement inspectorate. Let them do their job. Home affairs know what is required of them.

Let them perform their duties. This is not Zuma’s job, and it certainly is not the MK Party’s.Political thuggery is not law enforcement, and South Africans should never be expected to pretend otherwise.

We are a law-abiding nation where our constitution is the supreme law. The DA in KZN, a firm partner of the GPU, is committed to this.

MEC Duma must engage with EMS realities before making reckless public statements

The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes with concern the public spat initiated by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Transport MEC, Siboniso Duma, against a private ambulance service after last week’s horrific R102 accident. We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured an expedited recovery. We also welcome KZN Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane’s visits to the injured.

The spat comes after MEC Duma, on live television, alleged that the private service attended only to patients with medical aid, implying that others were abandoned. His comments further suggested that the public should wait for state ambulances to arrive.

What is conspicuously absent from this narrative is that MEC Duma could well have arrived on the scene before state ambulances - he can confirm whether he did or not. This, because provincial emergency medical services (EMS) often arrive long after private service providers begin treating patients.

In terms of MEC Duma's public utterances, the DA has seen legal correspondence which directly contradicts the MEC’s allegations of what happened on that dreadful day. The reality that MEC Duma should confront is that KZN’s EMS are in tatters. The province routinely fails to meet national norms for Priority One responses. In many rural areas, response times stretch from seven to 10 hours - if at all. When private service providers step in, as they did here, and transport patients without medical aid, pro deo to state facilities, this should be welcomed, not vilified.

As Transport MEC, Mr Duma should also be acutely aware that many state ambulances operate illegally with expired licence discs – a direct consequence of his department charging renewal fees which KZN’s Department of Health (DoH) cannot afford. It is not the DA’s assertion that licence fees should be waived but we must question whether those that did arrive on the scene of this horrific accident were licenced or not.

The state cannot cope alone. Functional vehicles, staff and equipment are insufficient, making public-private partnerships essential - a move already underway via the DoH. Public figures of MEC Duma’s stature should engage with these realities rather than making reckless statements that invite legal consequences.

The DA remains a committed partner within KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) and will continue working to restore a capable, ethical, and most importantly caring state.

DA welcomes appointment of new Health HoD as KZN faces tough road ahead

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) welcomes the appointment of Ms Penelope “Penny” Msimango as Head of Department (HoD) within the province’s Department of Health (DoH) – a role she has held in an acting capacity since last year.

The DA has long held the view that prolonged acting appointments at senior management level carry inherent risks. This includes instability, a lack of strategic continuity and the unintended undermining of the authority of the office. The confirmation of Ms Msimango’s permanent appointment is therefore both necessary and welcome.

Ms Msimango has served the DoH for many years and brings with her substantial institutional knowledge. This has been evident through her recent engagements and presentations before the Health Portfolio Committee, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) and other oversight platforms.

During this period, she has demonstrated leadership and has been instrumental in addressing a number of long-standing matters within the DoH. Notably, she becomes only the second female HoD in the provincial administration, after Treasury.

The challenges facing KZN’s DoH remain significant. The department’s financial position is fragile, workforce morale appears to be concerningly low, critical posts remain vacant and aging infrastructure and equipment - particularly within Emergency Medical Services (EMS) - continue to place strain on service delivery. It is clear that the task ahead will be demanding and the HoD will have her hands full.

The DA looks forward to working closely with the HoD at all levels to ensure that the health needs of KZN’s people are prioritised and met. As a constructive partner within KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) our commitment to building a capable, ethical and caring state remains unwavering.
