With razor-sharp wings and vision unmatched in the insect world, dragonflies are nature’s most formidable mosquito hunters. According to Smithsonian Magazine, these aerial predators boast an impressive hunting success rate of up to 95%, making them one of the most effective hunters in the entire insect kingdom.

A single adult dragonfly can devour anywhere from 30 to 100 mosquitoes per day, which has earned them the well-deserved nickname “mosquito hawks.”

Their role in mosquito control begins long before adulthood. As aquatic nymphs living underwater, they aggressively hunt mosquito larvae and pupae, sometimes consuming over 100 larvae daily. After emerging as adults, they take to the skies, using their exceptional eyesight, incredible speed, and ability to hover and maneuver mid-air to snatch mosquitoes and other flying insects on the wing.

By patrolling ponds, lakes, and marshes, dragonflies provide highly effective natural pest control. In addition to mosquitoes, they also consume flies, gnats, midges, and even other insects, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance in their habitats.

Voter rolls aren't supposed to be a list of people. They're supposed to be a list of qualified voters.

In NY, mail-in registrations are never verified for accuracy or authenticity unless challenged — and there's no way to know a given registration even exists in order to challenge it.

I confirmed this directly with Ulster County Commissioner John Quigley. His words: "We use the honor system here." They check whether the application is complete — nothing more. Every other piece of information is simply assumed true.

So how can NY's rolls be viewed as a list of qualified voters, rather than just a list of names with no way to tell who's actually eligible?

Yesterday was a special day for 97-year old Korean War Veteran Joseph Valiquette of the Clifton Assisted Living Community in Somerset, Massachusetts.

A year and a half ago, Joe was looking through his old military paperwork and noticed he didn't receive three medals when he was discharged.

His daughter Dianne Doyle, her husband Chuck and the American Legion in Swansea, MA worked hard to get his recognition and today he was awarded his three medals, a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives courtesy of Justin Thurber and a certificate of appreciation from and membership to the American Legion in Swansea.

I will never forget the first time I walked into St Peter's Basilica...

None of it is painted. Everything overhead that appears to be a fresco is a mosaic: millions of small glass tiles, cut and set into place by hand.

Michelangelo pierced the drum with sixteen windows, and beneath them runs a band of text, black on gold: TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM. "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church."

From the floor it reads like an ordinary inscription but each of those letters is two metres tall...

Above the windows the dome divides into sixteen segments, and within them six tiers of figures rise in rings: the popes buried in the basilica, then Christ, the Virgin Mary, St John the Baptist and the Apostles, then angels carrying the instruments of the Passion, then the faces of cherubim and seraphim. Above all of them, a blue sky scattered with gold stars, and at the summit, in the lantern, God the Father.

The man who designed it, Giuseppe Cesari, was a painter. Between 1603 and 1612 he produced sixty-five life-size cartoons setting out the whole scheme, and every one of them was then translated into glass by mosaicists.

The reason is actually pretty unglamorous. The basilica was damp, and candle smoke and incense from centuries of liturgy were eating the pictures alive. So the Vatican began converting the building into glass, dome by dome, and from the end of the 1600s the painted altarpieces too, one at a time. By the basilica's own reckoning, around ten thousand square metres of mosaic.

The workshop that did all of this is still open: twelve artists work in the Vatican Mosaic Studio today, cutting tesserae by hand in nearly 28,000 shades and fixing them with a linseed-oil stucco whose recipe has been in use for four centuries. Earlier this year its director, Paolo Di Buono, described the work:

Sweden is reintroducing printed books and handwriting into its classrooms. Once celebrated as a leader in digital education, the country is now directing significant resources toward traditional textbooks while limiting the use of tablets and screens, particularly for young students.

Swedish authorities attribute this policy shift to mounting evidence that excessive screen time may have harmed reading proficiency and basic skill development. The government has also announced plans to ban digital learning tools for children under six years old.

Scientific research on handwriting provides insight into the rationale. When children write by hand, they engage multiple brain areas responsible for motor control, visual processing, memory, focus, and language. Unlike typing, this process demands precise coordination of fine movements alongside letter recognition and word formation. Studies indicate that such multisensory engagement enhances letter knowledge, spelling, reading acquisition, and memory retention.

Printed books may similarly promote stronger comprehension. Research shows that people often retain information more effectively from physical pages than from digital displays. The tangible nature of paper offers spatial references that aid memory organization. In contrast, screen based reading, especially when interrupted by notifications or hyperlinks, can fragment attention and reduce deep focus.

This approach does not reject technology entirely. Computers and tablets continue to serve important roles in research, group projects, accessibility features, and interactive exercises. Education specialists emphasize the need for thoughtful integration, applying digital resources where they prove most effective while safeguarding core practices such as handwriting, printed materials, and direct teacher instruction.

Sweden's policy change mirrors growing international discussions about optimal screen time in schools. As educators worldwide evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of digital tools, many are reconsidering when traditional methods may better support fundamental learning.
