Eugenics historically sorted people through categories like fit/unfit, productive/dependent, competent/defective, normal/abnormal and valuable/burdensome. This is exactly why the Ranulph Fiennes case matters far beyond one well-known person.

There are thousands of disabled, elderly and vulnerable people whose liberty can be restricted behind the language of “care” and “best interests”, often with very little public scrutiny.

I know from my own family how frightening it is when a vulnerable person’s wishes, relationships and freedom become secondary to professional decisions and procedure.

Care must never become isolation. Protection must never become control without proper safeguards.

If this case finally makes the public look more closely at what happens to people who have no platform, no influence and no famous name, then that scrutiny is long overdue.

In UK 39% of learning disabled & autistic deaths are avoidable (LeDeR report 2026).
