Five major Ontario school boards that have been under the direct supervision of the Ford government for a year or more have posted budget deficits despite the education minister blaming trustees for their financial turmoil.

Tensions ran high & frustrations were palpable at a TDSB parent budget meeting Tuesday night, where parents pressed for answers on hundreds of staff cuts and program reductions planned for this fall.
But the Ford government-appointed TDSB Supervisor didn’t answer questions during the meeting & declined an interview with me afterward. Watch:
After studying over 500 years of history, I’ve found there are really only three things you need to do to build a healthy society.
First, educate your young people well—not just to be capable, but to be civil. If you have capable, civil people in a productive society, that’s a big part of the battle. Second, the finances must be sound: earn more than you spend and have more assets than liabilities. And third, don't get into a war—internally or externally.
If you can do those three things, you can have a prosperous, self-reinforcing society.
@BenJustJamin13@ItsDeanBlundell The real gotchas:
- US spends ~50% more per capita on healthcare, yet live 4-5 yrs less than Canadians on average
- US ranks near the bottom of OECD countries in infant mortality
- over two thirds of personal bankruptcy involves medial debt in US
@ColinDMello As the spouse of a teacher and parent to two young kids, it’s infuriating to see how the reality in the classroom has eroded in recent years. There is a glaring lack of supports and increasing burden of chronic underfunding and overcrowding being placed on the teachers.
@hearditfromme5@TinaYazdani See intentional PISA rankings. Canada consistently is top 5 over the long term for academic quality in the WORLD. We also have the highest rate of higher educational globally. Education is directly correlated with health, happiness and standard of living.
@tristan_sudbury@mfullilove 😂😂😂 population growth is a central requirement of our economic model. This year it’s expected to be zero…
Meanwhile, foreign investment is beginning to pour into the country and the Canadian dollar is outperforming the G10.
Special education families are furious about a TDSB budget survey that asks parents to rank their top 5 spending priorities, with special education supports listed as an option.
Advocates say special education is a human right, not a popularity contest or an optional priority.
@tristan_sudbury@mfullilove Convenient how cons keep pointing to ‘per capita’ stats recently, when all stats sources have asterisks for Canada’s data due to anomalous population + compared to is peers over the same time period. Can’t wait to see their feigned outrage when this stat flips with pop changes
@tristan_sudbury@mfullilove You can choose to ignore the facts. Foreign investment into Canada is at the highest level in nearly 20 years, but what does stats Canada know right….
32% of Ontario’s students now go to schools under supervisors with little to no experience in education.
Having people without any education expertise running school boards is bad for students, families, and educators.
If the Minister was serious about fixing schools, he would make class sizes smaller, stop starving special education, and address the kids mental health crisis. If he did this our schools would be safer places to work and to learn.
Schools belong to the families and communities they serve — not an office Queen’s Park.

@JohnFraserOS@fordnation@PaulCalandra The award winning documentary ‘backpack full of cash’ should be required viewing. It highlights just how awful the charter school experiment has been in the US.
Ontario has the fewest hospital beds per person of any province in Canada.
Ontario funds its hospitals at the lowest rate per person of all the provinces.
We deserve better.

@TinaYazdani Shame on this government!
Our kids deserve better. They have time and time again shown that educational experience, academia and the collective wisdom of those dedicating their lives to educating students does not matter. Education is merely a line item to Ford.
