Once the tallest building in South Africa, this is Mutual Heights.

Situated at 14 Darling Street #CapeTown, it’s the Old Mutual Tower that was constructed in 1939. The architects who designed this Art Deco building were Louw & Louw, working with Fred Glennie. They travelled the world for two years to find inspiration and materials for the project. It was to be the headquarters for the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society.

The grand entrance was supposed to symbolise wealth and power. African animal sculptures made out of cape granite adorn the building. The interior is made up of black, gold-veined onyx, marble, gold leaf and stainless steel.

Some other fun facts include:

⚫ The four elevators were the fastest in the world at a stage.
⚫ The marble was imported from Italy, chrome fittings from England, and the granite from a single boulder in the Paarl mountains.

For the #archi fans out there, I highly recommend taking a tour. It is so much better in person and certainly a darling of Cape Town’s skyline.
