Students deal with a lot: depression, anxiety, eating disorders, loneliness, insecurity, cutting, abuse, custody disputes, neglect, and suicide. If you work in a school… thank you. Thank you for caring about the whole child. Thank you for advocating for kids. They need you.
Teachers if you are burned out, here’s 5 questions to reflect on regularly for your own health:
* is it my stress or other peoples stuff
* am I empowering or enabling
* am I sacrificing too much
* is my sense of purpose realistic or superhero level
* am I self caring
Taking away specials/ electives such as Art, Music, PE, etc. to add more content for testing is the same as taking away recess. It may sound like a good idea, but many children come to school for these classes and removing them may remove their joy for learning.
Administrators who are unsuccessful, are so because they don't make relationships & staff morale a priority. Even if you didn't need a pat on the back doesn't mean it's not effective. Support, encourage, and appreciate your staff. Affirmation is powerful.
