I’m proud to have co-sponsored an amendment on the School Board with @CarlJacobsak that outlines exactly how we’d use an increased BSA to reverse cuts to the Anchorage School District budget for next year. An increase will save ASD athletics, academic programs, and class sizes!

We’ve seen strong growth in our youngest learners as a direct result of adopting a new K-5 reading curriculum. On the School Board, I’m committed to improving learning outcomes for all students, but especially those who need to show the most growth.

I’ve been passionate about education long before I considered joining the School Board. Since joining, I’ve led/supported initiatives that make our schools stronger, like implementing more effective reading curriculum and preemptively establishing policies around new technology.

The budget crisis is causing tangible harm to schools across the state. If the state comes through with more funding to invest in students, the amendment I co-sponsored with Member Jacobs will guide that additional funding to restore cuts our school district was forced to make.

Education is the only public dept the state hasn’t increased funding for in a decade. I’m thinking about the impact this will have on our Pre-K kids to attend a school district with more resources to invest in their K-12 education. Here’s hoping this bill becomes law!

Good news: The AK House just passed HB69—a bill that would increase the BSA by $1000. This is very exciting for our schools and students! If passed by the AK Senate and Governor, ASD will be able to restore a broad array of cuts.

We’ll be able to restore teaching positions, athletics, academic programs like IGNITE, and other valuable programming our ASD families expect. If school funding is updated, that will be huge for our schools!
