Very rare to have all the national news channels focused on California races, very exciting. That Gray Davis recall with Schwarzenegger replacing him, 23 years ago, was the closest I remember.
@agraybee Several times in the original Star Wars, the shot goes on a second too long & you see the robot veering off to the side when it’s supposed to be going straight ahead. Feels like the cut is right before the robot crashes.
@WolfmanZack_ I can’t afford that place. But I just ordered a whole case of my beloved Crown Price Moroccan sardines on the Internet, four bucks a tin!
Second week in a row that both grocery stores in my town have been without sardines. I don’t like it. Is there a sardine crisis? Are my Crown Prince-brand Mediterranean sardine fillets locked up in the Strait of Hormuz? CC: @RobertKennedyJr
Several cats are out of the bag in LA: You can talk about the homeless / addict problem, nobody can cancel you for that in 2026. You can dismiss your competitors as corrupt communists, and there’s no penalty! No apology tour. You just quickly advance to the finals. Wild to see.
Natural leaders *love* to campaign, they love meeting people, they aren’t scared of being confronted because they have sincere answers. A good politician loves the campaign & would never consider hiding. Everything’s an opportunity. Haven’t seen this in LA politics for decades.
Two days ago, Spencer Pratt held a cookout at Jim Gilliam Park in the Jungles. A week earlier, Rolling 60s territory. Politicians avoid these neighborhoods, scared of the anger from decades of neglect.
Spencer showed up anyway. Broke bread. Listened.
This is a new Los Angeles.

Young Jefferson idolized Patrick Henry, said “He spoke as Homer wrote.” They both played fiddle & loved going to boozy dances. Later, Jefferson described Henry as an uneducated populist fraud, and wrote a (coded) letter to Madison saying they should pray for Henry’s death.
Patrick Henry’s wild-ass rant of 1775, reconstructed from various letters & memories of the ~118 Virginia delegates who were there at St. John’s Church in Richmond, including Washington & Jefferson. This Scots-Virginian oratory became the American voice.

This is the kind of party journalism that Los Angeles Magazine used to do, something like Tom Wolfe’s character-study party reporting. An enjoyable read about a seismic shift in LA politics, back to something like the Richard Riordan-era glory days.

Walked out of my random hotel & down the clean friendly street to the first pub I saw. Very good steak salad for $22, endless Tom Steyer ads ignored by all during the ball game. Valley Village is a great part of LA.
