The Government of Alberta’s decision to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause to override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in order to force through legislation that targets transgender Albertans is unprecedented, dangerous, and profoundly unjust.

This is an assault on the fundamental human rights and dignity of transgender people - by deliberately setting aside constitutional protections, the government is telling a group of individuals that their equality, their safety, and their very existence is negotiable.

The gravity of this moment cannot be overstated.

The Notwithstanding Clause was never intended to be a tool for governments to strip away rights from a vulnerable minority - to use it in this way is to undermine the very foundations of our democracy and the promise of the Charter itself.

We must all be clear: transgender Albertans are our family members, our neighbours, our classmates, and our colleagues.

They deserve the full protection of the law, and the opportunity to live free from fear, discrimination, and state-sanctioned exclusion.

History will remember this choice, and it will also remember those who stood up in defense of equality, dignity, and justice.
