They found that the thick cell wall of strains with an intact HOC1 gene is the reason that they're difficult to transform with DNA. They have engineered the hoc1 mutation into the OPENPichia platform strain.

2つの株があって、ひとつは10年ほど前にパタゴニアの木こぶに生息する微生物なのが発見。
今回、もうひとつの株を英国の土壌から発見。もともとヨーロッパに存在した微生物らしい
