Now, nearly 20 years and 42 models later, the iPhone has become one of the most popular phones in the world. According to research from Demand Sage, Apple has sold more than 2.3 billion iPhones and has more than 1.5 billion users.

The first iPhone was released in June 2007 and sold exclusively by AT&T for $499.

Analyst Gene Munster of venture capital firm Deepwater Asset Management said investors were optimistic about the iPhone's impact on Apple. However, the initial data released by AT&T for the first few days of on-sale were a disappointment. He recalls that one investor at the time said general sentiment after the first weekend for the product was muted upon its arrival.

In 2007, Apple sold 1.4 million iPhones, of which 80% of sales were recorded in the fourth quarter. That same year, Nokia, maker of the iconic Nokia 3310, sold 7.4 million mobile phones in the fourth quarter alone.

CNBC technology reporter Kif Leswing said: "Nokia is considered unrivaled, unbeatable."

Meanwhile, Mr. Munster said the investment community mostly sees this as a much more difficult market for Apple to truly penetrate.
