It is difficult to watch the videos circulating online and the allegations of torture and mistreatment of people in custody.
I listened to Praise Aloikin say that Ugandans should never find ourselves negotiating for human rights. She is right about the principle: human rights are inherent. Freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is protected by our Constitution.
I am mindful that the UPDF disputes the authenticity and characterisation of some of the material circulating online. That is precisely why credible, independent institutions and due process matter. Allegations this serious should be investigated and the facts established.
As legal practitioners, we have a duty to speak up when allegations of torture or unlawful treatment arise, regardless of who is involved. Every person in custody should be treated humanely, brought before the courts and afforded due process. Let the evidence be tested and let the facts come out.
This is why we need strong and empowered institutions-the Uganda Law Society, the Uganda Human Rights Commission, our courts and other institutions charged with protecting constitutional rights.
Surely, Uganda belongs to us all 😔.
WATCH: Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has urged communities to embrace collective fundraising for development instead of relying solely on government or wealthy individuals. Mayiga said such initiatives can support socio-economic transformation in areas including health, education, employment and poverty reduction. He spoke at Bulange Mengo during a meeting ahead of the October 1 fundraising drive to honour the legacy of the late Most Rev Dr Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka. Masaka Diocesan Bishop Severus Jjumba called for the preservation of Bishop Kiwanuka’s legacy, particularly in religion, health, agriculture, education and the fight against poverty.

By working with other industry associations to identify jobs and opportunities for lawyers to participate. Today I met with a young surveyor who has pivoted into carbon measurement. She’s definitely taking the right path, so it shall be with young lawyers, we will show them the way.
By the time a young lawyer enrolls to the Bar, he or she has spent over two decades dedicating him/herself to rigorous education. Yet, after all that sacrifice, the reality many face entering the market is low remuneration, limited mentorship, and steep professional hurdles.
You should not have to navigate an unforgiving legal market alone.
My commitment is centered on Empowering Uganda Law Society to work directly for its members. When we mobilize the collective voice and institutional power of the Bar, ULS can actively support early-career Advocates, opening doors to emerging practice areas, establishing structured mentorship, and tackling the systemic bottlenecks that limit young lawyers growth.

Ethiopia’s army says it controls Alamata in northern Tigray as fighting intensifies, raising fears of a return to full-scale civil war.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports.
Today, I came across this beautiful scripture. “I will give you back seven times what you lost.” Joel 2:25. If you believe God will multiply everything you've lost in your life, please respond with an Amen.
