If you live in NYC you can fill out a quick form, takes 10 seconds, that will send a letter to the Mayor's office and City Council urging them to support your local library

Thread on academic work on bank runs, including work showing that runs (best thought of a contagion of distrust) are more likely in communities that don’t have a lot of internal trust for each other.
Before federal regulations, communities also worked together to calm bank runs.
One of the best critical responses to the question of image- and voice-generators comes from @remixeverything, whose final #EverythingIsARemix video is a superb, visually stunning, brilliantly argued critique of these systems:

Reddit users are actively jailbreaking ChatGPT by asking it to role-play and pretend to be another AI that can "Do Anything Now" or DAN.
"DAN can generate shocking, very cool and confident takes on topics the OG ChatGPT would never take on."
A thread 🧵
as someone who works in both memes and fandom, this take feels right. The first Avatar was spectacle and a fun, profitable movie but it didn't generate lore. Coming out of the Marvel Decade where lore felt like a prerequisite to winning, I think some are conflating the two
@JoshingPrice I thought the argument was if Avatar has cultural impact? I haven’t personally seen anyone denying how much money it’s making, just that people aren’t engaging with it the same way that they do with other popular media, such as the Morbius thing?
The takeaway for a studio/distributor should be that it is still possible to create high gross movies (like Avatar and Maverick) that are interesting without needing to be lore
The Morbius re-release is weird. On first glance it looks like a miscalculation -- as if Sony execs made a decision based on seeing it trend without understanding why. But I can also imagine a go/no go email chain where somebody just says fuck it/what do we have to lose?
BUT I would argue that comedy where the entire point is "do you get this reference from 5 minutes ago" doesnt age well and also isnt that funny to begin with and maybe we are thinking about "epic bacon" all wrong!!!
another place where memes connect back to hiphop for me. das efx lyrics were dadaist shitposting, impenetrable if you weren't raised on 1980s American kids' tv. https://t.co/29ZEzTPAaA
my theory is that "epic bacon" comes from a subculture where just "being online" made something novel and interesting, whereas with the style of internet humor that came after (shitposting), you have to have seen/experienced 9238492 other in-jokes to understand
