What does an internet beyond platforms actually look like?
@lottiland from @otherinternet__ is a researcher, writer & curator working at the intersection of digital commons, collective governance, and experimental online cultures. Her work dives into how we can build more participatory, public-interest infrastructures online.
Catch her in Berlin (14 June): https://t.co/VOGD4PkzqO
Several years ago, @CemFDagdelen and I tried to define an emerging mode of creative production as Mechanism Art.
Happy to see the art of rules and mechanisms taking space in canonical spaces like Biennale (under the umbrella of Protocol Art) ⚙️
Long Live Mechanism Art!
1. The Other Internet book is finally physically shipping.
2. We are hosting our first proper BOOK LAUNCH event in Berlin at @trust_support on Tuesday.
It’s going to be a huge family affair. Sam and Laura and I would love to see you and celebrate together with wine and snacks.
Some highlights from @mpg_dd ‘s panel on Blockchain Governance Dynamics on day 2 (in chronological order):
1. Pierre Noro promoting blockchain blasphemy,
2. @lottiland speaking about crypto’s 3 body problem and the normative vacuums that open up when we enter into spaces that are “censorship resistant”
3. @ElinorRennie drip feeding us with the hyperaxis order as a resilience ingredient that can help our institutions usefully expand over space & time.
In celebration of the forthcoming OI book, @lottiland@hxrts and @tobyshorin hosted a roundtable conversation with @cwgoes and @trent_vanepps on designing protocol institutions.

.@lottiland on "Junk value", for Lo Squaderno n.71:
"In contrast to @doctorow's platforms, however, tokens, and the projects and values they represent, don’t just turn to shit and die. They accumulate."

For this new book, I wrote a preface called Forgetting the Wheel. As you might imagine, it’s my first public reflection on the last decade of related work.
The book is officially open for preorder on Metalabel now:

This book is many things at once:
1. A memorial artifact, rendering all our essays beautifully a physical publication for the first time
2. A behind the scenes look at how we did it, with 4 🆕 mini essays from Toby, Sam, Laura, and Aaron about how OI evolved and worked, a beautiful introduction from the ever-wise @keikreutler, an interview on the state of independent research with @nayafia, and more
3. An archival dump🤫 of 6 never-published rough-cut essays from our super secret internal learning processes
4. A time machine through the shifting existential narratives of web3, and speculations on the future of network society
Thank you for growing up with us. This book is for everyone who's been with us the whole way, for the day ones, for everyone who was ever in the squad, for our haters, and for the next generation of kids who play for keeps.
The internet is over. Long live the other internet. Out on Metalabel now!
Other Internet, the BOOK! This was a labor of love that @tobyshorin@lottiland have been assembling on behalf of the whole squad for the past 10 months. It includes all of our hits, plus lots of behind the scenes material about what made OI such a special organization.
The response to this has been incredible... and we are going on a hybrid digital-physical BOOK TOUR to deploy Other Internet Technologies™ to the mainstream.
What podcasts / youtubers / media / bookstores would you like to see us appear on? Currently planning this out!
