BlockchainGov researcher Esen Esener presenting Measuring Decentralization for Law and Policy at the inaugural DeTaP workshop in London!

Her research explores how decentralization can be meaningfully measured for legal and policy purposes, and which dimensions matter most. The workshop offered an opportunity to test her methodology against perspectives from across the field, generating valuable feedback and new directions for the research.

Cupos limitados.

This weeks AOW is Digital sovereignties in a blockchain age, by Malcolm Campbell-Verduyn and Edemilson Paraná.

The chapter moves beyond the idea that blockchain either displaces or simply extends state sovereignty. Instead, it argues that multiple digital sovereignties are being asserted at once - across states, markets, and non-state actors.

A useful contribution for thinking about sovereignty as increasingly plural, relational, and socio-technical in the blockchain age.

New report from Elinor Rennie well worth a read.

[Ellie Rennie @ElinorRennie]

Earlier this year, my university - @rmit - asked me to provide a report on AI and higher education. Before writing this report, I was pessimistic about the future of universities. I now think that universities will become increasingly important but they need to change. The focus of the report is on how AI is reorganising creative work and adjacent areas of administration, what this means for graduates, and how we should respond. Prepared for RMIT University's College of Design and Social Context, it draws on economics and computer science, with examples from media, design, architecture, advertising and art, across six areas: work, platforms, value creation, organisations, physical AI and governance. It departs from other reports in that I suggest practice–arrangement bundles (in the Schatzkian sense), rather than tasks, as the unit through which to understand change. The report identifies two key challenges. First, automating entry-level work erodes the pathways through which novices become experts, and neglecting this risks technical, social and cultural collapse. The second is legibility: making practices machine-readable enables credit, interoperability and accountability, but also extraction, so who governs that infrastructure becomes a central distributional question. I recount my own work on contribution systems and Artificial Organisational Intelligence in the context of tackling economic and organisational challenges posed by AI. I also make the argument (as others have done) that universities should reconstruct 'apprenticeships', but to this I add material and situated practice, graduates' capacity for judgement, organisational literacy, machine-readable governance and institutional agency. For those overseas, our College is the equivalent of a Liberal Arts faculty with a very practice-based focus. The 'College' has over 21,000 students in Australia and Vietnam, from undergraduates to PhD candidates, taught by more than 1,000 academics. RMIT is Australia's biggest university - over 100,000 students when international campuses and vocational education are included.

Another Recommended reading: The Elgar Companion to the Geopolitics of Digital Sovereignty: Contested Networks, Territories and Self-determination, edited by Georg Glasze, Amaël Cattaruzza, Finn Dammann & Frédérick Douzet.

A timely contribution to debates on how digital infrastructures are reshaping sovereignty, territory, jurisdiction and political self-determination.

Especially relevant for anyone working on digital governance, geopolitics and networked forms of sovereignty.

📚 Recommended reading: Free Flow of Information: Hegemony, Contestation, and International Law by Wanshu Cong.

At a moment when AI is reshaping how information is produced, circulated, owned, and governed, this book offers essential historical context for understanding the legal architectures beneath today’s information economy.

Cong traces how international law has structured cross-border information flows since World War II, showing how frameworks built around human rights and free trade have also shaped the distribution of wealth and power.
