How Delta State was created in 1991.

Did you know that three states were originally intended to emerge from the old Bendel State? And did you also know that Itsekiri leaders and Anioma leaders were overcome with emotion, sharing tears in the hall that early morning when the announcement of Delta State's creation was made?

Itsekiri had initially planned to merge with Benin to form a single state, as agreed upon by the Olu of Warri and the Oba of Benin. However, the Oba of Benin had a change of heart after consulting with Urhobo and Benin leaders. When he said itsekiri’s won’t be in same state with the Benin’s the urhobo and ijaw leaders started celebrating screaming victory. I'll be sharing the full history later this month, but here's a brief breakdown of how events unfolded.

Itsekiri and Benin had proposed a joint state, with representatives Prince Omatseye and Chief Rita Lori for itsekiri advocating for the Itsekiri-Benin state (although a name had not been finalized at the time). However, the Benin representatives betrayed the Itsekiri, leading to a last-minute change in plans.

Meanwhile, Isoko, Urhobo, and Ijaw representatives, including Michael Ibru (Urhobo), David Ejor (Urhobo), Chief Dafinone (Urhobo), and Edwin Clark (Ijaw), were pushing for a "Core Delta" state.

And Ukwuani, Ika, Enuani, Olukumi, Aniocha Oshimili peoples, represented by Chief Moemeke and Sunny Odogwu, were advocating for an Anioma State.

The original plan was for three states to emerge, but Itsekiri was betrayed at the last minute, and a vote was called without all Itsekiri and Anioma representatives present. Ogbemudia, the Benin representative, told Chief Rita Lori, "you should bow to the Urhobo if you want to have peace in Delta State." This shocking statement revealed that the inclusion of Itsekiri in Delta State was a long-planned scheme, dating back to the break-up of the Western Region into Mid-West and Bendel, and eventually, Delta State.

When Delta State was announced, Anioma leaders and Itsekiri leaders left the hall in tears and heartbreak, while Urhobo and Ijaw leaders celebrated. Anioma leaders felt they had failed to establish a state for their people, while Itsekiri leaders were devastated by Benin's betrayal. But it isn’t over yet as the president were still trying to settle the ground.

Later, after meetings between the Olu of Warri and the president, Itsekiri leaders temporarily accepted to be in delta state and also supported Anioma's inclusion in Delta State, rather than being the only minority group in the state, surrounded by people who didn't like them (except for the Isoko people). When the capital was eventually shifted to Asaba due to disagreements over the capital's location between Itsekiri and Urhobo leaders, Itsekiri leaders again supported the Anioma people and the idea of the capital being located there.

Itsekiri’s was then attacked by urhobo’s in 1992 not even up to a year the state was created which gave birth to the Warri State movement for itsekiri’s.

I left the UK and returned to Nigeria to start my career in March 2013. Most of the Nigerian international students I went to uni with had already returned since 2012.

Nearly all of us who came back started planning to escape from Nigeria in 2016. There was only one thing that changed in Nigeria between 2013 and 2016. We know what or who it was.

But yeah, "GEJ was a terrible president." If you keep repeating it to yourself 9 years later, despite being mocked by all the data in existence, that will somehow make it true 👍🏿

Me, I don't care who has any investment in maintaining this gigantic untruth because none of you feeds me, and I will speak freely - "GEJ must go" was a foreign intelligence operation run out of Washington DC by the US State Department, whose doctrine interpreted Nigeria's economic growth and growing partnership with China as a strategic threat to American economic and military interests on the continent.

The Obama administration repeatedly interfered very directly and blatantly in that election cycle. Barack Obama recorded and posted a video urging Nigerians to "vote for the next chapter." Michelle Obama involved herself in #BringBackOurGirls, which was itself merely the 'Big Idea' within the larger marketing campaign that was "Jonathan must go." John Kerry travelled to Nigeria and met with the opposition.

The local players on the ground who took part in the marketing and political campaign to oust Goodluck Jonathan and replace him with the Illiterate were merely useful idiots - yes, that includes you reading this with your guilty conscience. If the shoe fits, I am definitely referring to you. You were nothing but a pawn in a geopolitical tussle between 2 of the Countries That Actually Matter.

Because you lack wisdom, insight and especially humility, you really thought you were doing something historic by removing an incumbent president - a trick you have not been able to repeat ever since, because the US State Department - which actually runs Nigeria - had no problem with 8 years of The Illiterate, and definitely has no problem with another 8 years of the Drug Dealer whom it actively protects.

You idiots thought that you were empowered, politically awakened people, when you were just chess pieces on a board being pushed around by forces you were too stupid and egotistical to recognise. Now your GDP has effectively HALVED in just 9 years, and a whole generation of high-quality human capital has been lost to the US and its allies.

Nigerians - even the enlightened ones - insist on being dishonest and anti-intellectual, even after the ego they are trying to protect has long since ceased to matter. You cannot fix problems when you won't even admit that they exist in the first place.
