I have the greatest respect for photography.
A photograph captures a fraction of a second. Then time gives it another purpose.

Looking at these images of the construction of the Maison de l’Europe (Council of Europe's first home) and Palais de l’Europe, where our headquarters are located now, almost everyone in these photographs is gone. Their work is not.

We live in an age of the ultra short term. But the project to defend democracy, human rights and the rule of law was built by people who knew they would never see the end of the story. Civilisation is built by generations willing to think beyond themselves.
