Antonio and Rosa, the longest married couple to divorce, the couple divorced after 77 years of marriage after Antonio found letters from an affair she had 60 years before. Antonio was 99 and Rosa was 96.

Antonio and Rosa were married in Naples, Italy, in 1934. Their union lasted an astounding 77 years—until an old box of letters changed everything. In 2011, at the age of 99, Antonio discovered a bundle of love letters hidden away in a drawer.

The letters dated back to the 1940s and revealed that Rosa, decades earlier, had carried on an affair. Though the relationship had ended long ago and the two had built a life together—raising five children and living into their 90s—the betrayal was too much for Antonio to bear.

He filed for divorce, making them the longest-married couple in history to split. Rosa, then 96, was reportedly heartbroken but accepted his decision. The story went viral as a reminder of how even the longest relationships can harbor unresolved truths—and how forgiveness, even after a lifetime, isn’t always guaranteed.
