In 1944, First Lieutenant John Robert Fox took on a crucial role in the Italian town of Sommocolonia, which was facing the threat of Nazi forces. Despite being part of the only Black infantry division in the U.S. Army engaged in combat during World War II, Fox demonstrated unwavering courage and leadership. For three days, he bravely held his position, guiding artillery fire against the Germans and assisting fellow American soldiers during their retreat.
Tragically, on December 26, Fox faced a fierce German assault. Realizing the dire situation and being outnumbered with dwindling ammunition, he made a selfless decision to sacrifice himself. He ordered an artillery strike on his own location, aiming to eliminate numerous Nazi soldiers and enable his comrades' escape. His final command was, "Fire it! There's more of them than there are of us. Give them hell!"
A week later, Fox's body was discovered among the remains of approximately 100 German soldiers, a testament to his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice.
