@frmarcellinus What about the 21 Coptic Christian men who were killed by ISIS on the sea-shore in Libya in 2015 for refusing to renounce Christ? Pope Francis commented a little while before his own death that they were "martyrs for all Christians".
@Scaramucci The unthinking mobs (= about 60% of the population) want sensations and excitement. Trump and Maga in the USA, and Farage, Johnson and Brexit in the UK, provide those. It's the modern version of the Roman desire for "bread and circuses".
The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans...
The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
Conclusion:
Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
You won’t get a ‘reset’, something ‘special’ or indeed any meaningful deal in the national interest with Europe unless we stop expecting our counterparts to follow our lead.
Anyone committed to Europe should publicly rip up the red lines on the customs union, single market and freedom of movement. The Labour electorate in a leadership contest should ask for nothing less.
Otherwise we are just wasting their time - and ours.
No, it’s not ‘normal’ for humans to be in competition all the time.
It’s not normal to work for most of your waking hours of the day.
It’s not normal to be stressed 24/7.
Stop taking a few hundred years of capitalism and pretending that’s just how being human is. It’s not.
@Peston Starmer has got nothing to lose and maybe much to gain by waiting. Delays will give him the chance to win personal kudos for any unexpected good developments. But bad developments can't drive his numbers down any lower than they are now.
@UcheMaryOkoli Great story at time of election: Everybody was watching it all on TV, and when Leo came out onto the loggia, the trainer cried out "Hey - it's my friend Bob. I didn't even know he was a priest!"
No one “earns” a billion dollars. No one can work a billion times harder than anyone else. There is no good, ethical, or righteous billionaire. That kind of wealth can only be accumulated through the exploitation of the working class. No exceptions.
@labourlewis For two generations since 1979 the British have been increasingly taught that they do not belong to a nation; that there is no "Society"; that individual interests trump community or national welfare. They can't even understand what "defending your country" means.
@hell_line0 As a Catholic anti-abortionist, I agree with her decision. If a baby has developed in such a way that there is no possibility at all of life outside the womb, then there is no moral reason for the pregnancy to continue. It is not a life that God planned to exist.
