Leads the Center of Emissions Excellence, and also serves as Chief Analyst Canadian oil markets at S&P Global Commodity Insights. All opinions are mine.
Maduro's ouster will not cause an "existential threat" to Canada's oil industry,
"Could it rebalance the heavy [crude oil] market and cause a widening of the [price] differentials over a longer term? Yeah … but … it’s definitely going to be within the range of price volatility that the Canadian sector has seen for many, many years," @kevinbirn of S&P said.
Great report here from @ForsterSam of @CDNAffairs:

@bataille_chris@politicalham Well…. We published some sensitivity on this a few years ago. Happy to share link But avg. opex for SAGD would be ~10/bbl USD (likely high estimate). That includes gas.
🇨🇦 The latest annual forecast update from @SPGlobal@KevinBirn upgrades the 10-year outlook for Canadian oil sands production for the fourth consecutive year.
"Despite a lower oil price environment ... producers continue to focus on maximizing existing assets"
MORE CANADIAN OIL
@andrew_leach@GK_Fellows Also b/c of flaw of averages applies to annual WCSB production levels. There is huge swing from turn around season to peak in fall/winter making annual average far less that peak production and thus peak pipeline demand over course of year.
I had a great panel discussion on Day 2 of @CERAWeek on Canada’s energy future with Saskatchewan @PremierScottMoe, @Sfleece, Ontario Minister of Energy and Electrification, and Justin Bourque, founder and president of Asokan Generational Developments, hosted by @KevinBirn, head of emissions excellence at @SPGlobal. Alberta will continue to lead the way for Canada in the energy sector!

Does oil have a future?
Peak this decade, but how long will the plateau last? 10-15 years or rapid decline?

The Long March...
According to Energy Institute data, China officially surpassed the United States in refining capacity in 2023, by 55kb/d. The U.S. now has 545kb/d less refining capacity than in 2019, while China now has 2.2 mb/d more.
@T_Mason_H Relevant and recent piece on this from marketplace on the relationship between Canadian heavy oil and complex US heavy refining capacity which includes a few thoughts from myself. https://t.co/eUmvmpTlHQ
