I've had 11th graders that don't know what a paragraph is.
I don't mean that they can't write a paragraph (they can't), but that they don't actually know what one is. I've asked students to look for the third paragraph on a page, or some such direction, only to get asked "what is that?"
I am not exaggerating. I am not being sensational. I have a lot of ideas for how things got so bad, but it is undeniably bad. The average person has no idea.
@Cernovich This got more attention than I am used to. I am unsurprised but disappointed by the racial comments. We had someone with us who could speak Spanish that day, I am unaware if any of those children had this issue. All of the children I am referring to were white. Shouldn't matter.
@Cernovich My wife and I have done a vision screening at a local school and realized that there were 8th graders that don't know the alphabet. They cannot identify individual letters. And to clarify, several 8th graders who were totally illiterate. Several got very upset when asked to read.
@Cernovich 6- my mother in-law recently was telling us she had been assaulted by a student. I told her she should report it to the police, she is unwilling to. The system encourages complacency from top to bottom. It cannot continue.
@Cernovich 5- if you told my my mother in law and my sister were the only two teacher in the country worth a damn, I would believe you. But the go to work every day and participate in the system the fails children at scale. Teachers at large picket for raises but not bad policy/results.
@Cernovich 4- who I think is responsible for the current state of affairs: 1) the teachers union 2) state politicians 3) local politicians 4) teachers 5) parents 6) childless tax payers
@Cernovich 3 - one of the school districts in my county (there are too many for such a small area) has a superintendent making over $500k/yr while ~1/4 of HS graduates read at grade level and less than 1/10 are proficient in math.
@Cernovich 2- my mother in-law and sister are teachers locally. (Different schools/districts) I hear first hand accounts of what is going on all the time. And because of them I have friends and aquaintances who are also teachers, and they tell similar stories.
@Cernovich 1- Since @Cernovich gave me a soap box I suppose I should use it. I have been talking about this for time locally and usually get either "you are an asshole" or "I know it's crazy right!?"
@RickAddante@Cernovich I went to a local high school. Back then my friends who you might say didn't do well in school, could read. We had a whole period dedicated to just reading. My grandfather was an 8th grade drop out, he could read. The state of affairs is a travesty.
@Cernovich Given the comments here I suppose it's worth saying that I do not see a racial matter at play here. Roughly 3/4 of students in my county read below grade level. It's just that people don't understand how poorly that 3/4 is doing. I grew up here, it didn't use to be this way.
@neontaster Im sure people aren't going to like this but I think there is room in the market for rough around the edges apartments. I got a discount on my security deposit on my first apartment because they didn't paint it before my move in date. Still nicer than my overpriced college dorm
