Species Spotlight: Eastern Cottonwood (Populus deltoides)
Eastern Cottonwood is one of the fastest-growing native trees in Canada!
Known for its triangular leaves and fluffy, cotton-like seeds, this large deciduous tree is typically found along rivers, wetlands, and floodplains. Its deep root system helps stabilize shorelines and reduce erosion, while its canopy provides habitats that are important for birds, insects, and other wildlife. Eastern Cottonwood thrives in moist soils and full sun, making it a great choice for large naturalized spaces and shoreline restoration projects.
Native to Eco Zones: 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a
Use the Native Plant Database to filter by region, type of plant, soil type, and light conditions to find plants that are a perfect match for your property 🌱
