You don't need to be pain-free before you start loading the spine.
Waiting for 0/10 pain before progressing rehab is one of the biggest reasons recovery stalls or doesn't get started in the first place.
Most clinicians know this - many patients don't.
Loading (safely) during pain is how we build self-efficacy in patients and show them that not all pain is dangerous....in addition to the physical benefits.
Early in my career, I was obsessed with making people move "correctly" without a deep understanding of why.
Now I get people to move differently with intent
-Does it change their pain?
-Does it enhance their confidence?
-Does it recruit different/more optimal muscle patterns?
Too many clinicians have let go of assessing movement quality because the research suggests that there is no optimal way to move at a POPULATION level.
👉 I suggest that there are more optimal ways for CERTAIN patients to move at an INDIVIDUAL level.
Clinicians need to keep an open mind here💡
