In many countries outside Africa, classroom hours are less, but still people learn and develop. Perhaps Uganda is one of the countries where students stay longest in class on a typical school day - especially in boarding schools.

On top of the long class hours, day scholars return home with daily loads of homework. They’re even given more work to carry home for weekends! School books and homework become a nuisance at home! What special output justifies this intensive schooling?

Dear Minister of Education, we really need to do something about this. This kind of schooling destroys brains and wholesome growth of our people. Many grade-obsessed parents can’t speak out, some fearing the blackmail from schools asking them to take their children elsewhere. Classwork is important, but education and life in general are not all about books.

‘Bulungi bwa nsi’ is actually a good initiative, and communities like Baganda already practice it. To work well though, it should be appreciated and owned by the community, not coerced. Once owned, the community will do the implementation themselves - including handling non adherence. Some otherwise good initiatives are killed by trying to shove them down people’s throats. Use sociologists, social workers, social psychologists, and philosophers to advise you on community dynamics and how to work out community cooperation - not just suddenly coming up with random ideas and somehow expecting that you will simply police people into them. And, should those initiatives fail, they might be thought to be impossible and become even harder to ever try again - yet it is basically a conceptualisation and implementation problem. You really need the Arts and Social Sciences more than ever before.

Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba says he's now been authorised by his father, President Yoweri Museveni, to shut down @DailyMonitor and @ntvuganda over claims that they have over time mocked the family's 40-year.

He's also threatened to have his political outfit, Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), forcefully take over as Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), where his father's political party, National Resistance Movement (NRM), commands the majority.

He has further threatened to arrest current LoP Joel Ssenyonyi and former MP Ssemujju Nganda for criticising his modus operandi when he boasted over the kidnap and torture of former Kampala mayor Erias Lukwago.

Ssemujju and Ssenyonyi said the current political crisis in the country mirrors the dictatorial era of Idi Amin Dada, when state abduction and killing of political opponents, silencing the media, breakdown of institutional governance and independence - especially parliament and judiciary, was the order of the day.
