🇵🇰 Today, the 9th #OIC Ministerial Conference on Women opened in Islamabad, 57 Member States, one hall, one question: how do we move from commitment to consequence for women across the OIC?

But before the flags were raised and the senior officials & ministers took their seats, there was this. 👇

⏳ Teams of the Ministry of Human Rights and #UNWomen Pakistan, for more than 16 hours a day, several weeks, with weekends that quietly disappeared, worked day and night to pull this all together.

🙏 Appreciation to the Ms. Saba Sadiq, Parliamentary Secretary, Human Right, Honourable Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Secretary Abdul Khalique Sheikh, Dr. Arif Laghari, and the entire team of MoHR who made it possible for Pakistan to host the OIC.

🤝 UN Women Pakistan is proud and deeply honoured to have supported the Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan in convening this Conference, under the theme Socio-Economic and Political Empowerment of Women in OIC Countries: Challenges and the Way Forward.

✍️ Pakistan is not simply hosting a conference. It is holding the pen on the Islamabad Declaration, an instrument that can anchor women's economic participation, political voice, protection from violence, and access to justice as shared priorities across the OIC, not aspirations we return to every few years.

🙏 To the team at MoHR, and to my own colleagues at UN Women under the leadership of Jamshed M. Kazi you worked hand in glove, without ceremony and without a break. You are the reason the substance is strong. Diplomacy is visible. The work that makes diplomacy possible almost never is.

What I am taking back from Sustainable Financing Accelerator Lab:

Three days in #Bonn, four headline takeaways that I will be unpacking for months.

1️⃣ Financing for gender equality is not a resource problem. It is an architecture problem. The money exists. The question is whether the rules that govern it, the planning forms, the budget codes, the regulatory standards, the capital market taxonomies...have gender built or embedded in or not? Changing those rules is harder than funding programmes. It is also the only thing that lasts. Because its systems issue.

2️⃣The Islamic finance opportunity is the most underexplored frontier in global gender finance. Pakistan sits at the intersection of the conventional and Islamic finance worlds. That is a first-mover advantage.

3️⃣ The systems change requires the courage to work inside institutions, not just alongside them. The most powerful thing UN Women can do in Pakistan to capitalise on existing strong partnerships that we have with government and private sector and make sure that the gender field on the PC-1 form cannot be left blank rather we code them. That work is invisible. It is not the kind of work that makes for dramatic project reports. It is the only kind of work that changes the system. We make sure private sector takes women empowerment as driver of economic growth, as strong investment.

4️⃣ And the one I keep returning to: we are not building this for the people in the room that we met in Bonn. We are building it for the woman in Balochistan who will never know this Lab existed. For the home-based worker in Lyari who will never hear the word taxonomy. For the woman farmer in Sindh who lost everything in the 2022 floods and rebuilt everything with nothing. The work we do in rooms like this only matters if it reaches her. And it will only reach her if we work closely with regulators, with public and provate sector.

To everyone at UN Women SFP who built this Lab.. Big thank you, for the design. You created a room where practitioners could be honest about what is broken, rigorous about what might fix it, and ambitious about what the world looks like when it works. That combination is rarer than it should be in international development.

#UNWOMEN #Pakistan Country Office leaves this Lab as a strong partner. I am leaving with absolute conviction that we can surely embed gender into sustainabile financing architecture, the architecture of what is possible, for women, for finance, for the future. We are the ones who change it. And the real work starts now!
