On my way to London for our event to mark #InternationalWomensDay2024. Using our research as a starting point, we’ll be asking what we can do to accelerate progress on gender equality globally.

I usually don’t comment on Pakistani politics. I disagree with IK on many political issues. But this is not about politics- it’s about my children’s father, his human rights & international law. For the past few years, I’ve been bullied & harassed into silence by PML-N goons, including rape threats & countless conspiracy theories. Meanwhile Twitter/ X is banned in Pakistan, PTI party members & civilian supporters have been abducted, anyone with a platform who was speaking out is now in jail & silenced, Imran Khan’s photo and name have been censored on state television (they have even redacted his image from any coverage of Pakistan’s World Cup win of 92!)
I owe it to my children to try to create some awareness about what is happening in Pakistan. Please help in any way that you can. Thank you.
Message from Imran Khan’s ex wife @Jemima_Khan
“In the last few weeks there have been serious and concerning developments regarding my sons’ father, Imran Khan’s treatment in prison. The Pakistan authorities have stopped all visits to him by his family and his lawyers. They have also postponed all court hearings. In addition to cutting off in- person visits, and in defiance of a court order, his weekly calls to his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, who are British and who live in London, were stopped on 10th September. We have received reports that the authorities have now turned off the lights and electricity in his cell and he is no longer allowed to leave his cell at any time. The jail cook has been sent on leave. He is now completely isolated, in solitary confinement, literally in the dark, with no contact with the outside world. His lawyers are concerned about his safety and well-being.
These actions come in the context of ongoing targeting of Imran’s family, as well as his party (PTI) members and supporters in an attempt to silence them and all political opposition in Pakistan. Imran’s nephew, Hassan Niazi, a civilian, has been detained in military custody since August 2023. More recently, Imran Khan’s sisters, Uzma and Aleema Khan, who have continued to speak out on his behalf, have also been arrested as they made their way peacefully to a demonstration and they are currently being held in jail, despite there being no proper or lawful basis for their imprisonment.
In June this year the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Imran is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained and called for his immediate release.
As a matter of urgency , we are calling for Imran Khan’s release, and for the release of his sisters and nephew as well as for his sons’ contact with their father to be re-established, so that they may have assurance first-hand that he is well and not being mistreated.”

“New restrictions on immigration would not only hurt the United States’ bottom line; they would also generate labor shortages and increase supply chain backlogs, much like the country experienced during the pandemic when borders were shut.”

Finally the authorities in Bangladesh arrested Abdus Sobhan Miah who worked as an aide to Sheikh Hasina and he started secretly snapping up properties in the city worth millions. Read my investigation on him, with @OCCRP attached. https://t.co/LBhzEi5cy2
India has lost Bangladesh. Despite India's crucial military intervention at the end of 1971 that ensured first the defeat of the Pakistan military after a nine month war, and then the independence of the country, there has for some time been a significant anti-India feeling in Bangladesh that waxed that waned depending on the political situation in both countries.
The irritation/anger perhaps started when Indian products flooded the Bangladesh market in 1972, impacting upon Bangladesh's manufacturing industry devestated during the war. And as years went on there was always the sense that India being an overly influential big country neighbour. In addition there was perhaps a communal element to the anger, with India being a dominant Hindu nation, whilst Bangladesh, a muslim one.
However, the Indian government's total and criticual support for the Awami League in recent years, irrespective of lack of free and fair elections, terrible human rights record and increasing authoritarianism - along with India prime minister's Modi's anti-muslim rhetoric - had in recently years ratcheted up the the anger towards India. And, it was the Indian government's continued support for the Awami League even after the law enforcement killings started on July 16 which was the nail in the coffin. It will take many many years before the Indian government can come back from this.
The ousting of Sheikh Hasina – the world’s longest-serving female leader – marks the most critical political crisis in Bangladesh since the revolution in 1971. https://t.co/1d0wfDhYUQ
