Grateful to our Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, for his clear and thoughtful piece in today’s @BusinessDay on the progress we are making toward a competitive, diversified electricity market.

Three years on from the load-shedding crisis, the operational stability we restored has created the platform for structural reform. The market operator licence, equal grid access now enshrined in law, more than 100 IPPs connected, the new wheeling policy, and the investments in retail market instruments and trading systems are tangible steps forward.

What gives me confidence is the balanced, responsible approach: advancing competition and unbundling while ensuring fair cost recovery across the system, protecting the most vulnerable through non-bypassable charges and public interest obligations, and building investor confidence through well-designed rules that learn from international experience but fit our context.

As Chairman, I am proud of the way Dan and the executive team are leading this work alongside the Board. This is how we carefully rebuild a national asset - so it can power inclusive growth and leave a lasting legacy of reliable, affordable and cleaner energy for South Africans.
